2006 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's best-selling compact suv. introductionthe ford escape is america's best-selling compact sport-utility. And it's a good choice. Folding down the rear seats reveals a moderately sized cargo area with a flat floor. It's quick and enjoyable and communicates very well with the automatic. The escape is also available with a gas/electric hybrid system. The 3. 0-liter v6 comes standard on the limited and is optional on the xlt. The escape hybrid is fitted with a 2. 3-liter gas engine with an electric motor.  the xls 20,070) and xls 4wd 21,820) come standard with air conditioning, low-back cloth front bucket seats, illuminated remote entry, power door locks, windows and mirrors, tilt steering column, speed controls on the steering wheel, privacy glass, 15-inch steel wheels and am/fm/6cd. Safety is enhanced with the addition of anti-lock brakes (abs).  the xlt v6 24,880) and xlt v6 4wd 25,140) come standard with the automatic transmission.  limited 24,930) and limited 4wd 26,630) get premium leather seats, seat heaters, dual front sun visors with illuminated vanity mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated exterior mirrors, a reverse sensing system, and a mach audio in-dash six-cd changer with automatic volume control. The limited is distinguished by its monochrome exterior with body-colored trim and bright machined 16-inch aluminum wheels. Limited models are upgraded with front side-impact air bags designed to offer torso protection.  a safety package 595) for all models adds ford's safety canopy rollover protection system and front side air bags. We strongly recommend getting it as it can provide head protection in side impact or rollover accident.  option packages are available for each trim level. A luxury comfort package 1,095) for limited models includes a 320-watt audiophile stereo with six-disc in-dash cd changer, six speakers plus subwoofer; heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and reverse sensing system.  the xlt no boundaries package 1,055) adds all-terrain owl tires, 16-inch bright machined aluminum wheels, black painted step bars, class ii trailer towing, and wheel lips. The xlt sport 24,185) and xlt sport 4wd 25,935) boast all the xlt standard equipment plus 16-inch bright machined aluminum wheels, p235/70r16 tires, painted dark shadow gray fascias, bodyside cladding, wheel lip moldings and black step bars.  a leather comfort group 595) is available for xlt and xlt sport models, and class ii towing preparation 395) can be ordered for xlt, xlt sport and limited models. A cargo convenience group 150) for all models adds a retractable cargo area cover and rear cargo storage bin. Stand-alone options include power moonroof 585) on xlt, xlt sport and limited models; side step bars 350) on xls and xlt models, and a roof rack with horizontal bars 40) on the xls.  the escape hybrid 26,900) and hybrid 4wd 28,525) are equipped similarly to the limited models. walkaroundthe ford escape is wide for the class (compact suvs), giving it a well-planted road demeanor. Its forward-poised stance, large wheel lips, wide body cladding, and integrated bumper guard lend a functional appearance, while its short front and rear overhangs add to its sporting appeal. The escape has a family resemblance to the ford explorer and expedition, and looks bolder and more aggressive than the honda cr-v.  being able to see the leading edge of the hood from the driver's seat makes the escape easier to maneuver in tight places. Its 7. 8 inches of ground clearance may help clear some obstacles, but not big rocks. Outside door handles are easy to grab and feel like they're going to last.  the styling was freshened for 2005 with new headlamps, new fog lamps, a new egg-crate grille, new fascias, revised bumpers, and new wheels. The result of all this was a fresher, more contemporary look for escape.  accessories from ford outfitters include a snap-in pet barrier and a system to haul two mountain bikes in the cargo area. Bike racks can also be mounted on the roof; the standard roof rack with crossbars holds up to 100 pounds. Foot rails are designed to make it easier to lift kayaks, snowboards and other toys onto the roof rack. The rear bumper is also designed to aid roof access.  the no boundaries rack system features a sliding rail that can be repositioned from the roof to the rear of the vehicle, locking into the bumper. This provides two separate loading surfaces: a traditional roof rack and a vertically oriented rack across the rear. When not in use, the sliding rails can be stored within the conventional roof portion of the rack system. interiorthe escape is a compact suv, but the front seats are nearly as roomy as those in the midsize explorer. Getting in or out of the front seats is made easier by low door sills and wide door openings. Overall, the cabin is a pleasant place. The xls has manually adjustable seats trimmed with cloth. Xlt gets premium cloth trim. Leather comes standard on the limited, optional on the xlt.  a redesign of the interior for 2005 brought upgraded seats, new fabrics, new gauges, and more interior storage. The shifter on automatic models was moved off of the column and onto the floor. Illuminated switches for the power windows and power locks made them easier to find.  white-faced instruments are set in a simple, easy-to-understand instrument panel. The audio system and heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls in the center stack are angled slightly toward the driver for easier access while driving.  side-impact airbags are optional, and are part of a safety package that includes ford's safety canopy rollover protection system. Pretensioners combined with load-limiting retractors are standard on front-seat belts. In a crash, these pretensioners automatically tighten the belts, while the load limiters are designed to reduce the risk of chest injuries in severe collisions. We strongly recommend always wearing seatbelts as they are the first line of defense in a crash; more than half of the nation's approximately 42,000 traffic fatalities each year are people not wearing seatbelts.  the rear seats offer good knee room. The rear-seat cushion can be removed for more load-carrying capacity. The suspension has a comparatively taut ride quality, without the roly-poly and mushy ride that characterizes larger suvs with big off-road tires and long-travel suspensions. The suspension was upgraded starting with 2005 models with larger-diameter front shocks and a new front stabilizer system to better control ride motions.  we've found the escape handles well. The steering is responsive, direct and accurate with no dead spot in the center, and there's enough feeling in the steering to impart a sense of control. The tires offer respectable grip in paved corners. Transient response is surprisingly good, meaning the escape maintains its composure in a series of left-right-left lane-change maneuvers. And we found it to be a good match for the automatic transmission. The 2. 3-liter engine produces 153 horsepower and 152 pound-feet of torque. It uses a balance shaft for smoothness.  the 3. 0-liter v6 engine delivers stronger acceleration performance and we don't pine for power in a v6 escape. The transmission shifts smoothly up and down, and chooses gears appropriately for the situation. The engine's broad power band never lugs or strains. Drum brakes are used on t.

2004 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big, roomy, smooth and stable. introductionford redesigned and re-engineered the expedition for 2003 and the result was a vastly superior product. The ford expedition is smooth, stable and refined. Its handling is precise and responsive given its size and weight. These are benefits of its rigid chassis and sophisticated independent rear suspension. By comparison, the old (pre-2003) expedition had a rough ride and a sloppy truck-based suspension.  the interior was redesigned for 2003 as well. A small center seat on the second row slides forward to give front-seat parents access to a small child.  safety is enhanced with a lower front bumper, an optional safety curtain designed to protect occupants in a rollover, adjustable pedals to give smaller drivers a better seating, and a tire-pressure monitor. Advancetrac electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and other active safety systems are available to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle to reduce the chance of skidding off the road.  the expedition is packed with features, including the availability of the powerfold third-row seat, which folds perfectly flat with the press of a button. The reverse sensing system can alert the driver as the expedition is backed toward an object such as a parked car, a short pole, or a child on a tricycle. Most of these features, including a rear-seat dvd entertainment system, are now available on the less-expensive xlt as well as the top-of-the-line eddie bauer models.  towing capability is impressive. When properly equipped, the 5. 4-liter, two-wheel drive expedition is rated to tow up to 8,950 pounds. lineupford expedition comes with a choice of two engines: the standard 4. 6-liter v8 rated and the 5. 4-liter v8. The 2004 expedition comes in five trim levels: xls, xlt, xlt sport, and eddie bauer.  xls 32,090) and xls 4wd 34,660) are the value-conscious models. They come well equipped, but offer little in the way of options. Many options are available. The 5. 4-liter v8 is optional 395)  xlt sport is an appearance package 850) that adds dark shadow grey exterior cladding, high-gloss dark shadow grey tubular step bars, two-tone bumpers, moldings and lower grille in dark shadow grey and silver upper grille. It's available with 2wd or 4wd.  nbx is essentially a package 1,645) that outfits xlt 4wd models for the backcountry with all-terrain tires, unique 17-inch chromed steel wheels, and special shocks tuned for off-road performance. It's distinguished by tubular steel running boards and fog lamps. Inside are heavy-duty rubber floor mats and a cargo area soft liner. (nbx replaces last year's xlt fx4 off-road package.)  eddie bauer 38,040) adds front captain's chairs with two tone-leather and 6-way driver power, automatic climate control with rear a/c, a premium sound system, arizona beige lower body side cladding, floor console, overhead console, 11 cup holders, fog lights, privacy glass with power flip-open rear windows, satin nickel grille, homelink, electrochromic mirror, power outside heated mirrors with memory, security approach lamps and integrated turn signals, power adjustable pedals with memory, power driver's seat with memory, reverse sensing system, black non-illuminated running boards. The 5. 4-liter v8 is optional 395) on the eddie bauer 2wd, but is standard on eddie bauer 4wd 41,585).  optional safety features include the safety canopy 650), designed to help protect the heads of first- and second-row passengers in the event of a rollover or side impact. Advancetrac 795), ford's electronic stability enhancement system, monitors traction at all wheels and automatically maintains stability while cornering on slippery surfaces. Tire pressure monitors 150) are also available, which alert the driver when a tire is low on air.  an in-dash navigation system 1,995) and a dvd rear-seat entertainment system 1,500) are available. walkaroundthough it looks remarkably similar at first glace, this second-generation expedition shares almost nothing with pre-2003 models. Upon closer examination, it looks bigger and bolder than its predecessor. Its overall dimensions are roughly the same as before. However, the track has been widened nearly two inches to give it a well-planted stance.  the ford expedition is larger than a chevy tahoe, smaller than a suburban. It's larger than a toyota sequoia and considerably larger than a dodge durango.  the raised hood gives the expedition a towering presence. The standard wheels are 17 inches for a bold look. The roof height is lower than the previous generation. Bumpers are integrated more smoothly into the overall design. Door handles are the full-grip variety, making them easier to grab for occupants, whether left- or right-handed, gloved or not gloved.  expedition's bumper beams are designed to prevent smaller cars from sliding beneath its frame in an accident. interiorthe ford expedition has an attractive interior. An eddie bauer expedition is a very pleasant place to be with handsome leather trim that's warm and friendly. The seats are comfortable. The interior is dressed up with a metallic satin finish used on the rings that surround the vents and door handles. Shapes are round, and controls are hefty for an easy grip.  storage space is generous. The front center console available in some versions of the expedition can fit a small laptop computer. The console has a slot to hold pens and a palm pilot or other pdas. The lighter colors used for the upholstery give it a lighter, more car-like air.  the interior features a number of clever and useful innovations. The available power-operated third-row seats fold flat with the press of a button. The third-row seat is split 60-40 into two seats. Push a button on the wall of the cargo area, and one side powers down. Hold down the other button, and the other side powers down. The power-down buttons are convenient. The third row disappears into the floor, leaving a perfectly flat cargo area. The flat floor combined with the flaps that cover the gap where the seats hinge make it easy to slide objects in and out. We changed the expedition repeatedly from a people hauler to a cargo hauler and back again with just a simple push of the button. After dumping that off, a pack of teenagers piled in to go to a punk rock concert. The third row is comfortable enough for a couple of full-size adults. The next day we picked up a high-backed wicker chair from the furniture store. The third-row headrests can be pushed down flush with the seatbacks, greatly improving rearward visibility when no one is seated back there.  the second-row bench seat splits roughly into thirds. The middle section can be moved forward 11 inches, almost abutting it to the back of the front center console. That gives front-seat parents easier access to a small child or a child in a safety seat. The small center seatback can also be folded down and used as a work surface for the two people in back. The two outboard second-row seats fold easily forward for access to the third-row seat.  the expedition can be outfitted with enough safety equipment to create a cocoon inside in case of an accident. Dual-stage front airbags are standard. An optional side airbag canopy is designed to protect first- and second-row passengers in a side-impact crash or in a rollover. The eddie bauer model we drove came standard with power-adjustable pedals, a feature we short women greatly appreciate to keep us a safe distance from the airbag.  interior features are easy to program. It works well, but like all navigation systems, takes some time to master. driving impressionthe ford expedition is the standard bearer for its class. 2001 ford mustang review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. First and still foremost. introductionthe ford mustang has remained true to the traits that made an instant classic of the 1964-1/2 original, even as it is entering the third year of its fifth generation. It's still relatively big for a sporty car, with plenty of available options, and small-block v8 power.  with the latter, there's plenty of torque. It won't be mistaken for anything else. It makes a statement. The mustang has only two true competitors, the chevrolet camaro and the pontiac firebird. For 2001, the ford has added a value-leader v6 coupe in standard 16,805) trim. That makes nine different price points, and we haven't even mentioned the super high-performance cobra; the cobra is again offered in coupe and convertible styles, in one trim level.  the mustang v6 is a 3. 8-lliter overhead-valve unit producing 190 horsepower. The 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8 produces 260 horsepower, and mustangs that have it are called gts. The rear fender air intake, for example, has sharp corners and pronounced lines; but the rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. The front end features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, combined with a square-edged honeycomb grille and a chrome pony. Tricolor front fender badges recall the good old days, as does the prominent but non-functional hood scoop.  for 2001, gt models get unique hood and side-scoop treatments, along with fog lights and a rear spoiler.  the mustang's arched roofline is pretty modern, but around back it's 1965 again with vertical, three-element taillamps. Wheels are available in 15-, 16- or 17-inch sizes, depending on model, but each features a flat-spoke design to complement the sharp corners of the body shell. interiorthe current-generation mustang has better seats than ever before, with longer travel, and seatbelts are attached to the seat frames so they move with them. All models feature reclining bucket seats. Leather upholstery is standard in the premium gt, optional in some other models. Running horses embossed on the upper portions of the seat backrests recall the deluxe 'pony' interior of the mid-sixties. The instrument panel, center console and headliner are color-keyed.  for 2001, ford has redesigned the center console, repositioned the front cupholder, made the rear cupholder larger, while adding a tissue holder and a power outlet. An electric rear window defroster, previously optional, is now standard on all mustangs.  the coupe interior is cozy, with enough seat-track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbowroom to keep from feeling cramped. The mustang's back seat is small, with only enough room for small objects or kids. The trunk is small with an even smaller opening. A split fold-down rear seat is standard on all models and handy for hauling cargo.  an 80-watt premium sound system with both cd and cassette capability comes standard on all models. Serious sound fans can opt for the 230-watt, 10-speaker mach 460 system, which comes standard in premium-trim mustangs and mustang gts, and is a $550 option in deluxe models. For 2001, it can be ordered with an in-dash, six-cd changer. driving impressionperformance is what the mustang gt is all about. Its 4. 6-liter, sohc modular v8 produces 260 horsepower at 5250 rpm, with 302 pounds-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. And it sounds great, whether cruising or at full throttle. Last year, the gt engine benefited from revised camshafts and intake manifold runners, and larger valves for improved airflow above 3000 rpm. A new coil-on-plug ignition system replaced the previous ignition for higher-energy sparks.  mustang's 3. 8-liter split-port v6 engine develops 190 horsepower at 5250 rpm, with 220 foot-pounds of torque at 2750 rpm. All models, regardless of engine or transmission, have a 3. 27:1 rear axle ratio.  the flexibility of both the v8 and v6 engines make them good mates for the transmissions, which have sufficient strength to take high-rpm shifts for the life of the car. Both transmissions shift smoothly. The bosch system works at all speeds: whenever wheelspin is detected, the system retards ignition timing, cuts fuel flow, and activates the brakes at one or both drive wheels, in that order. The car involves the driver. Most of the raw edges and choppiness of the previous generation have been smoothed out. The current-generation mustang was engineered for improved rear-suspension compliance, with longer wheel travel, which reduces ride harshness. A revised boost curve gives the steering a more linear response and better on-center feel than in pre-1999 mustangs. And the turning circle of this latest mustang has been reduced by three feet through changes to the steering rack, the lower control arms and front stabilizer bars.  the braking system was re-engineered for 1999, also, with new aluminum twin-piston front calipers to reduce unsprung weight by a significant 10 pounds. The new calipers also contribute to greatly improved brake pedal feel, while the new master cylinder that arrived at the same time improved not only modulation but also the ratio of brake pedal travel to braking action. Abs, like traction control, is standard on premium v6s and all v8s. It can be ordered as a $730 package with traction control on all other mustangs except base-level, manual-transmission coupes. Abs helps the driver to maintain steering control under hard braking, a useful, though not necessarily advisable, feat in the mustang. summarythe camaro and firebird are slightly more powerful than the mustang gt. The mustang gt is also less expensive than either of the gm pony cars, by several thousand dollars. For now, however, the mustang is merely the best. model lineupcoupe: standard 16,805), deluxe 17,370), premium 18,600), gt deluxe 22,440), gt premium 23,590), cobra (na)convertible: deluxe 22,220), premium 24,785), gt deluxe 26,695), gt premium 27,845), cobra (na). assembled indearborn, michigan. model testedmustang gt premium 23,590). America's best-selling sport-utility goes for another crown. introductionthere seems to be an unending stream of sport-utilities hitting showrooms, but none have come close to the popularity of the ford explorer.  its roominess, solid reputation for durability, quality engineering, good looks and overall reputation are all factors in its huge popularity. walkaroundbefore the ford explorer existed there was the jeep cherokee with its straight lines and sharp edges. The explorer introduced softer lines and rounded edges and set the prevailing suv style in the process. That look continues.  the distinctive, large grille is flanked by wraparound headlights. There's a slot for air in the bumper, and an air scoop below. The look suggests refined ruggedness, as well as strong family ties with the ford truck family-and that's precisely what the designers intended. There is a new front bumper and round fog lamps, new body side moldings, roof rack and lift gate trim. But the familiar explorer is still there.  the hood slants steeply, which gives the explorer an aggressive look. At the rear-a vestige of its truck heritage-are variable rate leaf springs. Turn the new t-handle toward 'gate' and the top-hinged door rises easily and parks up and well out of the way. Turn the handle toward 'window' and the glass can be raised by itself. Another feature we like is a convenient interior power lock/unlock button on top of the left rear wheel-well for operating the door locks when standing at the back of the vehicle.  a new optional reverse sensing system makes parallel parking much easier. The system uses sonar to warn the driver when anything is less than six feet behind the vehicle. The driver is alerted by a beeping sound that increases in frequency as the vehicle approaches the obstacle; the tone becomes continuous when the rear bumper is less than 10 inches from the object. We found the system to be extremely helpful in accurately judging distances when backing up. It's useful for positioning the explorer for loading and unloading. But entry height is not a serious problem. Shorter folks may find optional running boards helpful.  the overall design of the interior is quite good, featuring the flowing shapes and soft-edged buttons and controls now favored by ford. The various controls are king-size, making them easy to operate when the vehicle is moving, and we give the overall appearance of the instrument panel top marks. Floor consoles have been redesigned. Higher trim levels boast rear cupholders and a storage bin. The optional moon roof has a one-touch-open feature.  seating is a big plus. The front buckets are covered in high-quality cloth with an attractive, subdued pattern. The seats are among the most supportive in this class, with aggressive thigh and side bolsters.  the explorer's other strong suit is its best-in-class roominess, perhaps the key element in its popularity.  safety is improved this year with new optional side air bags. Housed in the outer side bolster of the front seats, they deploy within 30 milliseconds of impact.  a new homelink system can operate up to three remote controls to open garage doors and turn on house lights, which improves safety and convenience. And travelnote provides the driver with an electronic message recorder and play-back system.  three engines are available: a 4. 0-liter overhead-valve v6 rated at 160 horsepower, a 4. 0-liter single overhead-cam v6 with 210 horsepower, and a 5. 0-liter v8 that makes 215 horsepower.  deciding to buy an explorer is not too difficult. Deciding which explorer with which engine and which transmission may take an afternoon of brochure browsing. In between are the sport, xls, xlt and eddie bauer. This is the best engine for most folks. It provides plenty of power for passing and tackling long grades, yet it's inexpensive and delivers good fuel economy. It also comes with the five-speed automatic transmission, which does a gret  the v8 is the best choice for anyone who tows a trailer. It's easy to get in and out. Visibility all around is quite good in spite of the roof's large b- and c- pillars. The driver enjoys that secure, command-of-the-road seating position that's helped make sport-utilities so popular.  the explorer doesn't really drive like a truck. Though more springy than a sedan, the ride is comfortable. Some of that springiness has to do with its rear leaf springs, some of it has to do with the big tires. The suspension does do a good job absorbing road irregularities, though, and that's how it differs from other trucks. There's no excessive body lean in turns. The steering is exceptionally quick and precise. It doesn't wander in a straight line. It's easy to manage on narrow roads. It simply does not drive large.  overall, the explorer feels like a solid, well-built vehicle, though there is a bit of wind noise in the 40-60 mph range.  we're pleased with the acceleration performance provided by the revised 210-horsepower v6. It launches with enthusiasm and maintains that enthusiasm to a degree that would calm any concerns about safe merging with traffic. Like most sport-utility vehicles, the engine becomes noticeably audible under hard acceleration, but it's smooth and quiet under normal operation. Overall, the single overhead-cam v6 engine is a sweetheart. Unless extra torque is needed for towing a car or a big boat, we don't think it's necessary to spend the extra money for the v8.  although the explorer has racked up virtually all of its huge sales numbers with the standard 160-horsepower overhead-valve engine, the 210-horsepower overhead-cam engine is a much better powerplant. The auto mode is used for most driving, which continually monitors and adjusts power to the front wheels to minimize wheel slip. The 4x4 high mode electronically locks the transfer case in high gear, providing a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels; this mode is primarily for driving off road or in extreme winter conditions. The 4x4 low mode switches the transfer case to the lower gear ranges for serious off-roading.  though superior to a car in terms of off-road capability, the explorer is not the leader in backwoods prowess. The anti-lock brakes improve control on slippery surfaces, allowing the driver to brake and steer at the same time. summarythe explorer operates in a populous realm, against some very able competition. It's not the least expensive sport-utility. But for the kind of all-around use most families get from their suvs, the explorer's formula is still tough to beat. assembled inst. 2001 ford escort review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Stylish, affordable, and fun to drive. introductionford's zx2 provides responsive handling and a zippy engine bundled in a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Front and rear seating is spacious and comfortable, and the trunk is impressively large for such a small car. The zx2 also delivers good fuel economy. Air conditioning, for example, is not standard and adds $795. Abs is a $400 option. This engine produces 130 horsepower. A five-speed gearbox is standard. Styling in this class ages quickly, however.  it shares its basic structure and dimensions with the escort sedans, and the chassis is based on a previous-generation mazda protege, a solid, successful design. Not having to start from scratch helped keep the price down. Ford reinforced it for improved safety, better handling and a smoother ride.  zx2 comes with the standard safety features, such as dual airbags and side impact protection. interiora roomy, attractive cabin makes the zx2 a comfortable place for long trips. A sporty instrument panel peeks beneath a wedge that sweeps attractively into the door panels. Interior fabrics and materials are of higher quality than some of the other cars in this class. The inside door handle is on the dainty side. The driver's seat is height adjustable, a nice extra for shorter drivers. There's enough headroom and legroom for a 5-foot, 10-inch adult. But the shortest person will need to sit behind the driver if the driver is tall. Heater ducts for the rear seat area add comfort in the winter. Getting in and getting out is a squeeze.  the 11. 8-cubic foot trunk is a bit shallow, but it's sizable by compact coupe standards and the rear seats can be folded forward to make room for longer items.  the zx2 is nicely trimmed. Three cupholders with liners and a center console add convenience. Hooks on the floor hold the floor mats in place. Yet it is a compact car. Not every bolt is covered with a piece of trim as it would be in a luxury car.  it pays to read the owner's manual to fully understand ford's optional air conditioning system. It senses when the outside temperature is above 50 degrees fahrenheit and switches on automatically in all but two modes. The system shuts off under hard acceleration to improve performance. At other times, it cycles on and off constantly, which can be a little annoying because it can be felt as a subtle bump through the throttle (though many people won't notice). The zetec engine is pleasant and willing in all driving situations, with plenty of extra punch for tight passing situations on two-lane highways. The power band of the engine is flexible, providing torque and tractability at lower revs in heavy traffic. There's enough power here to break the front tires loose from a standing start. But a little planning is required when passing on uphill grades at high altitudes. The engine starts sounding busy at higher revs -- it isn't as smooth and refined as the honda civic's engine.  weighing in at just under 2,500 pounds, the zx2 accelerates from 0-60 mph in slightly less than 8 seconds. That measures up well to other leading compacts, including the honda civics. Fuel economy is rated at 26/33 mpg. The five-speed gearbox shifts smoothly with ratios that seem well suited to the engine torque. Driving enthusiasts will appreciate the pedals, which are arranged reasonably well for heel-and-toe downshifting.  steering is precise and handling is responsive. Ride quality is firm, but smooth. The suspension is damped well for soaking up potholes and irregular pavement, but keeps the driver in communication with the road. Zx2 is nicely balanced. Healthy amounts of understeer at the limit make it easy to drive. It is stable at high speeds, even in gusty side winds. Body lean is controlled well in corners.  the zx2 uses independent macpherson struts and coil springs for the front suspension. It's a tough, durable setup, though not as sophisticated as a double-wishbone. The rear suspension is ford's quadralink. Front and rear anti-roll bars are standard to reduce body lean in corners. Ford engineers tuned the zx2 suspension, steering and brakes for sporty handling and a relatively firm, controlled ride quality.  stopping is no problem. Zx2 brakes are composed of front discs and rear drums. Roomy rear seats and generous trunk space make it practical for going out on the town or packing up for a cross-country haul. Its performance may not quite measure up to its aggressive appearance, but the zx2 compares favorably against its competitors. model lineupzx2 12,145). assembled inhermosillo, mexico. options as testedair conditioning 795); am/fm stereo with in-dash cd and six-disc trunk-mounted cd changer 295); power group 395) includes keyless remote entry, power windows, power locks; comfort group 395) includes cruise control, tilt steering, dual map lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel; floor mats 55); abs 400). model testedzx2 12,145). 2008 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Haul people, tow boats. introductionford explorer is a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction. Available with v6 or v8 power, the explorer competes against the chevy trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder.  explorer was completely redesigned for the 2006 model year and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation. The latest explorer is quieter than previous models, and it rides better. It leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter, and the interior has been improved throughout. More important, it's a very nice vehicle that's pleasant to live with and it compares well with the competition.  all explorers offer a smooth ride and decent handling for such big, heavy vehicles. The interiors are pleasant, with only oddly designed door panels to complain about. With five, six, or seven-passenger seating configurations, customers can outfit their explorers to fit their passenger and cargo carrying needs.  with the v8 engine, the explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,310 pounds; that's about as much as a jeep grand cherokee with a hemi. And explorer is rated to carry up to 1,531 pounds of payload.  explorer has earned the best possible impact protection rating in the federal government's crash tests: five stars for the driver in a frontal impact, the front-seat passenger in a frontal impact, front-seat occupants in a side impact, and rear-seat occupants in a side impact, according to the national highway traffic safety administration's 2006 model year new car assessment program. Ford says the explorer is designed to meet all known federal frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through 2010.  for 2008, ford adds new standard and optional features. Side curtain airbags are standard on 2008 models, voice activation is added to the optional navigation system, and top-line limited models get standard power adjustable pedals and a universal garage door opener. Explorer's truck-based chassis gives it towing capability, while its clever independent rear suspension smoothes the ride for back-seat passengers. lineupthe 2008 ford explorer lineup comprises the xlt 2wd 25,755), xlt 4wd 28,050), eddie bauer 2wd 28,100), eddie bauer 4wd 30,395), limited 2wd 31,870), and limited 4wd 34,165). All are available with the standard 4. 0-liter v6 and five-speed automatic transmission or an optional 4. 6-liter v8 with a six-speed automatic 1,295). The audiophile stereo 510) and sirius satellite radio 195) with six-month subscription are available separately. Power retracting running boards are optional for eddie bauer and limited 695). Later in the model year, 20-inch wheels, capless fueling, and ford sync will be offered.  seating choices include a manually folding third-row seat 875) on xlt and eddie bauer, standard on limited. A power-folding third row is available on eddie bauer 1,370) and limited 495). The third-row seat comes standard on the limited, but can be deleted for credit (-$375), providing a flatter cargo floor.  safety features standard on. walkaroundup front, ford explorer looks like an f-150 pickup with finer, scaled-down features. At the same time, its generous use of chrome, big-and-bold lamps, and square-cornered aero mirrors make this latest-generation explorer look more like a lexus suv than a ford, and we mean that in the most complimentary way.  between the elaborate lamps front and back, however, explorer is a big, empty box with five large doors and a whole bunch of space inside.  each explorer trim level presents its own visual personality. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield.  the seats are supportive and comfortable. The colors and trims are elegant and tasteful, and the use of metallic trim is not overdone.  second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench with recline adjustment, or as two captain's chairs with fold-down armrests and a center console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo.  the third row, when ordered, is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding.  the cargo floor is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise. The five-seater has slightly more room with the seats folded.  the dvd-based navigation system is very easy to use, with excellent colors and graphics, and a big eight-inch display. For 2008, it can now be operated via voice commands.  ford's sync communications and entertainment system, due late in the 2008 model year, can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players. Voice commands and/or steering wheel buttons can be used to control all functions.  the rear-seat entertainment system's drop-down screen seems small a bit small. When in position for viewing, the video screen combines with the rear head restraints to block the driver's view to the rear. Outward visibility elsewhere is good, with less obstruction than expected from the thick c-pillars.  we don't care for the door handles. Ford designed the interior door panels so the armrests and door pulls would supplement the impact protection hardware built into the door's innards. Thus, the armrests and door pulls were separated, with the pulls positioned below the armrests. This poor ergonomic positioning makes i.

2008 ford edge review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, the edge is easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Getting in and out of it is easier, too. Yet it gives up nothing in passenger and cargo space. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design.  the edge is not small. Considered a midsize crossover utility vehicle, the edge competes with the nissan murano, toyota highlander and cuvs, all of which are larger than their slippery styling suggests.  we found the edge roomy and comfortable with fully foldable seats for big cargo carrying. It drives well, with good performance from a modern v6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.  the edge has a contemporary look we find appealing. We like its bold chrome grille. Ford sync communications and entertainment system is available on the 2008 edge, allowing the driver to change radio stations and make phone calls using voice commands. The available navigation system adds voice activation, the driver's window now powers up or down with one touch, and a new interior appearance package has red seating surfaces with contrasting stitching. A power liftgate, a universal garage door opener, and 20-inch wheels are available. lineupthe 2008 ford edge comes in three trim levels: se, sel, and limited. All models are powered by a 3. 5-liter v6 engine that produces 265 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard. All-wheel drive is available for all models.  edge se 25,565) and se awd 27,315) come equipped with cloth upholstery, driver's seat lumbar adjustment, air conditioning, cruise control, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, 60/40 split second-row seat, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, 4-speaker am/fm/cd stereo with auxiliary input jack, rear spoiler, and p235/65r17 tires on alloy wheels. A six-disc cd changer 245) is optional.  edge sel 27,560) and sel awd 29,310) add fog lamps, six-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, keyless keypad entry; 6cd, automatic headlights, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a vehicle information center. Options include an upgraded sound system 385) and a seating flexibility package 985) that adds leather upholstery, a flat-folding six-way power adjustable front passenger seat, and a second-row split folding rear seat. Available for both se and sel models are ford sync entertainment and communications system 395) and p245/60r18 tires on alloy wheels 295). These tires are also offered on chromed alloy wheels for the sel 750).  the new edge limited 30,555) and limited awd 32,305) come with leather upholstery, ford's audiophile sound system with nine speakers, ford sync communications and entertainment system, rear park assist, heated front seats, flat-folding six-way power adjustable front passenger seat, memory for the driver's seat and driver's exterior mirror, second-row reclining and power-folding split seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, universal garage door opener, interior air filter, heated mirrors, and p245/60r18 tires on chromed alloy wheels. Limited options include an interior appearance package 525) with red leather seat inserts with contrast stitching; p245/50r20 tires on alloy wheels 895); towing package 395); navigation system 1995); sirius satellite radio 195); power liftgate 490); rear-seat dvd entertainment system 1295); roof rails 95). The vista roof dual sunroof 1395); the portion over the front seats works like a typical sunroof, though larger, while a fixed glass panel spans the second row of seats; power-operated cloth shades can close off both sections.  safety features that come standard on all models include dual front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact air bags for the front seats, side curtain airbags with rollover protection for both rows of seating, anti-lock brakes, traction control, advancetrac electronic stability control with rollover mitigation, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Rear park assist is available and can help alert the driver to objects or people behind the vehicle when backing up. walkaroundthe edge is bigger than it looks in photos. The reason is that it has a wide track and a long wheelbase with short overhangs. What does all this mean? (the track is the distance between the left and right wheels. The long wheelbase and wide track are not just about looks; they make for a more stable vehicle because the majority of the mass is inside the wheels. A go-kart is the ultimate expression of this look. We're not suggesting the edge looks like a go-kart, but its aggressive stance makes it stand apart from the tippy look of traditional suvs with relatively narrow track measurements and massive front and rear overhangs.  the edge features ford's newly rediscovered bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan.  despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The rear tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like rear tailgates found on many suvs. We found the rear design to be a cross between a lexus rx and a bmw x3, which cannot be a bad thing.  the vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof, providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a foot-wide panel between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorthe edge combines a stylish, comfortable interior with lots of cargo-hauling utility.  front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. Two decent cupholders reside alongside the substantial shifter. The center stack is angled outward to make it easy to reach the large knobs for the climate and entertainment controls. The interior appearance package adds red seat inserts and contrasting red stitching that combine to give the interior a sporty look. It can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players (it will charge an ipod). To issue a voice command, the driver hits a steering wheel button and speaks the command. Occupants can tell the system to play a specific artist, album or track stored on an mp3 player. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier thanks to rear wheels that are placed well back and thus allow for less intrusion from the wheel wells.  carrying cargo is an area where the edge excels. The tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. With the rear seats are in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room, but pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to open up 69. 0 cubic feet of storage space on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. The rear seatback splits 60/40 for increased versatility and the back reclines several degrees on all models for.
