2006 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's best-selling compact suv. introductionthe ford escape is america's best-selling compact sport-utility. And it's a good choice. Folding down the rear seats reveals a moderately sized cargo area with a flat floor. It's quick and enjoyable and communicates very well with the automatic. The escape is also available with a gas/electric hybrid system. The 3. 0-liter v6 comes standard on the limited and is optional on the xlt. The escape hybrid is fitted with a 2. 3-liter gas engine with an electric motor.  the xls 20,070) and xls 4wd 21,820) come standard with air conditioning, low-back cloth front bucket seats, illuminated remote entry, power door locks, windows and mirrors, tilt steering column, speed controls on the steering wheel, privacy glass, 15-inch steel wheels and am/fm/6cd. Safety is enhanced with the addition of anti-lock brakes (abs).  the xlt v6 24,880) and xlt v6 4wd 25,140) come standard with the automatic transmission.  limited 24,930) and limited 4wd 26,630) get premium leather seats, seat heaters, dual front sun visors with illuminated vanity mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated exterior mirrors, a reverse sensing system, and a mach audio in-dash six-cd changer with automatic volume control. The limited is distinguished by its monochrome exterior with body-colored trim and bright machined 16-inch aluminum wheels. Limited models are upgraded with front side-impact air bags designed to offer torso protection.  a safety package 595) for all models adds ford's safety canopy rollover protection system and front side air bags. We strongly recommend getting it as it can provide head protection in side impact or rollover accident.  option packages are available for each trim level. A luxury comfort package 1,095) for limited models includes a 320-watt audiophile stereo with six-disc in-dash cd changer, six speakers plus subwoofer; heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and reverse sensing system.  the xlt no boundaries package 1,055) adds all-terrain owl tires, 16-inch bright machined aluminum wheels, black painted step bars, class ii trailer towing, and wheel lips. The xlt sport 24,185) and xlt sport 4wd 25,935) boast all the xlt standard equipment plus 16-inch bright machined aluminum wheels, p235/70r16 tires, painted dark shadow gray fascias, bodyside cladding, wheel lip moldings and black step bars.  a leather comfort group 595) is available for xlt and xlt sport models, and class ii towing preparation 395) can be ordered for xlt, xlt sport and limited models. A cargo convenience group 150) for all models adds a retractable cargo area cover and rear cargo storage bin. Stand-alone options include power moonroof 585) on xlt, xlt sport and limited models; side step bars 350) on xls and xlt models, and a roof rack with horizontal bars 40) on the xls.  the escape hybrid 26,900) and hybrid 4wd 28,525) are equipped similarly to the limited models. walkaroundthe ford escape is wide for the class (compact suvs), giving it a well-planted road demeanor. Its forward-poised stance, large wheel lips, wide body cladding, and integrated bumper guard lend a functional appearance, while its short front and rear overhangs add to its sporting appeal. The escape has a family resemblance to the ford explorer and expedition, and looks bolder and more aggressive than the honda cr-v.  being able to see the leading edge of the hood from the driver's seat makes the escape easier to maneuver in tight places. Its 7. 8 inches of ground clearance may help clear some obstacles, but not big rocks. Outside door handles are easy to grab and feel like they're going to last.  the styling was freshened for 2005 with new headlamps, new fog lamps, a new egg-crate grille, new fascias, revised bumpers, and new wheels. The result of all this was a fresher, more contemporary look for escape.  accessories from ford outfitters include a snap-in pet barrier and a system to haul two mountain bikes in the cargo area. Bike racks can also be mounted on the roof; the standard roof rack with crossbars holds up to 100 pounds. Foot rails are designed to make it easier to lift kayaks, snowboards and other toys onto the roof rack. The rear bumper is also designed to aid roof access.  the no boundaries rack system features a sliding rail that can be repositioned from the roof to the rear of the vehicle, locking into the bumper. This provides two separate loading surfaces: a traditional roof rack and a vertically oriented rack across the rear. When not in use, the sliding rails can be stored within the conventional roof portion of the rack system. interiorthe escape is a compact suv, but the front seats are nearly as roomy as those in the midsize explorer. Getting in or out of the front seats is made easier by low door sills and wide door openings. Overall, the cabin is a pleasant place. The xls has manually adjustable seats trimmed with cloth. Xlt gets premium cloth trim. Leather comes standard on the limited, optional on the xlt.  a redesign of the interior for 2005 brought upgraded seats, new fabrics, new gauges, and more interior storage. The shifter on automatic models was moved off of the column and onto the floor. Illuminated switches for the power windows and power locks made them easier to find.  white-faced instruments are set in a simple, easy-to-understand instrument panel. The audio system and heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls in the center stack are angled slightly toward the driver for easier access while driving.  side-impact airbags are optional, and are part of a safety package that includes ford's safety canopy rollover protection system. Pretensioners combined with load-limiting retractors are standard on front-seat belts. In a crash, these pretensioners automatically tighten the belts, while the load limiters are designed to reduce the risk of chest injuries in severe collisions. We strongly recommend always wearing seatbelts as they are the first line of defense in a crash; more than half of the nation's approximately 42,000 traffic fatalities each year are people not wearing seatbelts.  the rear seats offer good knee room. The rear-seat cushion can be removed for more load-carrying capacity. The suspension has a comparatively taut ride quality, without the roly-poly and mushy ride that characterizes larger suvs with big off-road tires and long-travel suspensions. The suspension was upgraded starting with 2005 models with larger-diameter front shocks and a new front stabilizer system to better control ride motions.  we've found the escape handles well. The steering is responsive, direct and accurate with no dead spot in the center, and there's enough feeling in the steering to impart a sense of control. The tires offer respectable grip in paved corners. Transient response is surprisingly good, meaning the escape maintains its composure in a series of left-right-left lane-change maneuvers. And we found it to be a good match for the automatic transmission. The 2. 3-liter engine produces 153 horsepower and 152 pound-feet of torque. It uses a balance shaft for smoothness.  the 3. 0-liter v6 engine delivers stronger acceleration performance and we don't pine for power in a v6 escape. The transmission shifts smoothly up and down, and chooses gears appropriately for the situation. The engine's broad power band never lugs or strains. Drum brakes are used on t.

2004 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big, roomy, smooth and stable. introductionford redesigned and re-engineered the expedition for 2003 and the result was a vastly superior product. The ford expedition is smooth, stable and refined. Its handling is precise and responsive given its size and weight. These are benefits of its rigid chassis and sophisticated independent rear suspension. By comparison, the old (pre-2003) expedition had a rough ride and a sloppy truck-based suspension.  the interior was redesigned for 2003 as well. A small center seat on the second row slides forward to give front-seat parents access to a small child.  safety is enhanced with a lower front bumper, an optional safety curtain designed to protect occupants in a rollover, adjustable pedals to give smaller drivers a better seating, and a tire-pressure monitor. Advancetrac electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and other active safety systems are available to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle to reduce the chance of skidding off the road.  the expedition is packed with features, including the availability of the powerfold third-row seat, which folds perfectly flat with the press of a button. The reverse sensing system can alert the driver as the expedition is backed toward an object such as a parked car, a short pole, or a child on a tricycle. Most of these features, including a rear-seat dvd entertainment system, are now available on the less-expensive xlt as well as the top-of-the-line eddie bauer models.  towing capability is impressive. When properly equipped, the 5. 4-liter, two-wheel drive expedition is rated to tow up to 8,950 pounds. lineupford expedition comes with a choice of two engines: the standard 4. 6-liter v8 rated and the 5. 4-liter v8. The 2004 expedition comes in five trim levels: xls, xlt, xlt sport, and eddie bauer.  xls 32,090) and xls 4wd 34,660) are the value-conscious models. They come well equipped, but offer little in the way of options. Many options are available. The 5. 4-liter v8 is optional 395)  xlt sport is an appearance package 850) that adds dark shadow grey exterior cladding, high-gloss dark shadow grey tubular step bars, two-tone bumpers, moldings and lower grille in dark shadow grey and silver upper grille. It's available with 2wd or 4wd.  nbx is essentially a package 1,645) that outfits xlt 4wd models for the backcountry with all-terrain tires, unique 17-inch chromed steel wheels, and special shocks tuned for off-road performance. It's distinguished by tubular steel running boards and fog lamps. Inside are heavy-duty rubber floor mats and a cargo area soft liner. (nbx replaces last year's xlt fx4 off-road package.)  eddie bauer 38,040) adds front captain's chairs with two tone-leather and 6-way driver power, automatic climate control with rear a/c, a premium sound system, arizona beige lower body side cladding, floor console, overhead console, 11 cup holders, fog lights, privacy glass with power flip-open rear windows, satin nickel grille, homelink, electrochromic mirror, power outside heated mirrors with memory, security approach lamps and integrated turn signals, power adjustable pedals with memory, power driver's seat with memory, reverse sensing system, black non-illuminated running boards. The 5. 4-liter v8 is optional 395) on the eddie bauer 2wd, but is standard on eddie bauer 4wd 41,585).  optional safety features include the safety canopy 650), designed to help protect the heads of first- and second-row passengers in the event of a rollover or side impact. Advancetrac 795), ford's electronic stability enhancement system, monitors traction at all wheels and automatically maintains stability while cornering on slippery surfaces. Tire pressure monitors 150) are also available, which alert the driver when a tire is low on air.  an in-dash navigation system 1,995) and a dvd rear-seat entertainment system 1,500) are available. walkaroundthough it looks remarkably similar at first glace, this second-generation expedition shares almost nothing with pre-2003 models. Upon closer examination, it looks bigger and bolder than its predecessor. Its overall dimensions are roughly the same as before. However, the track has been widened nearly two inches to give it a well-planted stance.  the ford expedition is larger than a chevy tahoe, smaller than a suburban. It's larger than a toyota sequoia and considerably larger than a dodge durango.  the raised hood gives the expedition a towering presence. The standard wheels are 17 inches for a bold look. The roof height is lower than the previous generation. Bumpers are integrated more smoothly into the overall design. Door handles are the full-grip variety, making them easier to grab for occupants, whether left- or right-handed, gloved or not gloved.  expedition's bumper beams are designed to prevent smaller cars from sliding beneath its frame in an accident. interiorthe ford expedition has an attractive interior. An eddie bauer expedition is a very pleasant place to be with handsome leather trim that's warm and friendly. The seats are comfortable. The interior is dressed up with a metallic satin finish used on the rings that surround the vents and door handles. Shapes are round, and controls are hefty for an easy grip.  storage space is generous. The front center console available in some versions of the expedition can fit a small laptop computer. The console has a slot to hold pens and a palm pilot or other pdas. The lighter colors used for the upholstery give it a lighter, more car-like air.  the interior features a number of clever and useful innovations. The available power-operated third-row seats fold flat with the press of a button. The third-row seat is split 60-40 into two seats. Push a button on the wall of the cargo area, and one side powers down. Hold down the other button, and the other side powers down. The power-down buttons are convenient. The third row disappears into the floor, leaving a perfectly flat cargo area. The flat floor combined with the flaps that cover the gap where the seats hinge make it easy to slide objects in and out. We changed the expedition repeatedly from a people hauler to a cargo hauler and back again with just a simple push of the button. After dumping that off, a pack of teenagers piled in to go to a punk rock concert. The third row is comfortable enough for a couple of full-size adults. The next day we picked up a high-backed wicker chair from the furniture store. The third-row headrests can be pushed down flush with the seatbacks, greatly improving rearward visibility when no one is seated back there.  the second-row bench seat splits roughly into thirds. The middle section can be moved forward 11 inches, almost abutting it to the back of the front center console. That gives front-seat parents easier access to a small child or a child in a safety seat. The small center seatback can also be folded down and used as a work surface for the two people in back. The two outboard second-row seats fold easily forward for access to the third-row seat.  the expedition can be outfitted with enough safety equipment to create a cocoon inside in case of an accident. Dual-stage front airbags are standard. An optional side airbag canopy is designed to protect first- and second-row passengers in a side-impact crash or in a rollover. The eddie bauer model we drove came standard with power-adjustable pedals, a feature we short women greatly appreciate to keep us a safe distance from the airbag.  interior features are easy to program. It works well, but like all navigation systems, takes some time to master. driving impressionthe ford expedition is the standard bearer for its class. 1999 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's best-selling sport-utility goes for another crown. introductionthere seems to be an unending stream of sport-utilities hitting showrooms, but none have come close to the popularity of the ford explorer.  its roominess, solid reputation for durability, quality engineering, good looks and overall reputation are all factors in its huge popularity. walkaroundbefore the ford explorer existed there was the jeep cherokee with its straight lines and sharp edges. The explorer introduced softer lines and rounded edges and set the prevailing suv style in the process. That look continues.  the distinctive, large grille is flanked by wraparound headlights. There's a slot for air in the bumper, and an air scoop below. The look suggests refined ruggedness, as well as strong family ties with the ford truck family-and that's precisely what the designers intended. There is a new front bumper and round fog lamps, new body side moldings, roof rack and lift gate trim. But the familiar explorer is still there.  the hood slants steeply, which gives the explorer an aggressive look. At the rear-a vestige of its truck heritage-are variable rate leaf springs. Turn the new t-handle toward 'gate' and the top-hinged door rises easily and parks up and well out of the way. Turn the handle toward 'window' and the glass can be raised by itself. Another feature we like is a convenient interior power lock/unlock button on top of the left rear wheel-well for operating the door locks when standing at the back of the vehicle.  a new optional reverse sensing system makes parallel parking much easier. The system uses sonar to warn the driver when anything is less than six feet behind the vehicle. The driver is alerted by a beeping sound that increases in frequency as the vehicle approaches the obstacle; the tone becomes continuous when the rear bumper is less than 10 inches from the object. We found the system to be extremely helpful in accurately judging distances when backing up. It's useful for positioning the explorer for loading and unloading. But entry height is not a serious problem. Shorter folks may find optional running boards helpful.  the overall design of the interior is quite good, featuring the flowing shapes and soft-edged buttons and controls now favored by ford. The various controls are king-size, making them easy to operate when the vehicle is moving, and we give the overall appearance of the instrument panel top marks. Floor consoles have been redesigned. Higher trim levels boast rear cupholders and a storage bin. The optional moon roof has a one-touch-open feature.  seating is a big plus. The front buckets are covered in high-quality cloth with an attractive, subdued pattern. The seats are among the most supportive in this class, with aggressive thigh and side bolsters.  the explorer's other strong suit is its best-in-class roominess, perhaps the key element in its popularity.  safety is improved this year with new optional side air bags. Housed in the outer side bolster of the front seats, they deploy within 30 milliseconds of impact.  a new homelink system can operate up to three remote controls to open garage doors and turn on house lights, which improves safety and convenience. And travelnote provides the driver with an electronic message recorder and play-back system.  three engines are available: a 4. 0-liter overhead-valve v6 rated at 160 horsepower, a 4. 0-liter single overhead-cam v6 with 210 horsepower, and a 5. 0-liter v8 that makes 215 horsepower.  deciding to buy an explorer is not too difficult. Deciding which explorer with which engine and which transmission may take an afternoon of brochure browsing. In between are the sport, xls, xlt and eddie bauer. This is the best engine for most folks. It provides plenty of power for passing and tackling long grades, yet it's inexpensive and delivers good fuel economy. It also comes with the five-speed automatic transmission, which does a gret  the v8 is the best choice for anyone who tows a trailer. It's easy to get in and out. Visibility all around is quite good in spite of the roof's large b- and c- pillars. The driver enjoys that secure, command-of-the-road seating position that's helped make sport-utilities so popular.  the explorer doesn't really drive like a truck. Though more springy than a sedan, the ride is comfortable. Some of that springiness has to do with its rear leaf springs, some of it has to do with the big tires. The suspension does do a good job absorbing road irregularities, though, and that's how it differs from other trucks. There's no excessive body lean in turns. The steering is exceptionally quick and precise. It doesn't wander in a straight line. It's easy to manage on narrow roads. It simply does not drive large.  overall, the explorer feels like a solid, well-built vehicle, though there is a bit of wind noise in the 40-60 mph range.  we're pleased with the acceleration performance provided by the revised 210-horsepower v6. It launches with enthusiasm and maintains that enthusiasm to a degree that would calm any concerns about safe merging with traffic. Like most sport-utility vehicles, the engine becomes noticeably audible under hard acceleration, but it's smooth and quiet under normal operation. Overall, the single overhead-cam v6 engine is a sweetheart. Unless extra torque is needed for towing a car or a big boat, we don't think it's necessary to spend the extra money for the v8.  although the explorer has racked up virtually all of its huge sales numbers with the standard 160-horsepower overhead-valve engine, the 210-horsepower overhead-cam engine is a much better powerplant. The auto mode is used for most driving, which continually monitors and adjusts power to the front wheels to minimize wheel slip. The 4x4 high mode electronically locks the transfer case in high gear, providing a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels; this mode is primarily for driving off road or in extreme winter conditions. The 4x4 low mode switches the transfer case to the lower gear ranges for serious off-roading.  though superior to a car in terms of off-road capability, the explorer is not the leader in backwoods prowess. The anti-lock brakes improve control on slippery surfaces, allowing the driver to brake and steer at the same time. summarythe explorer operates in a populous realm, against some very able competition. It's not the least expensive sport-utility. But for the kind of all-around use most families get from their suvs, the explorer's formula is still tough to beat. assembled inst. 2008 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Haul people, tow boats. introductionford explorer is a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction. Available with v6 or v8 power, the explorer competes against the chevy trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder.  explorer was completely redesigned for the 2006 model year and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation. The latest explorer is quieter than previous models, and it rides better. It leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter, and the interior has been improved throughout. More important, it's a very nice vehicle that's pleasant to live with and it compares well with the competition.  all explorers offer a smooth ride and decent handling for such big, heavy vehicles. The interiors are pleasant, with only oddly designed door panels to complain about. With five, six, or seven-passenger seating configurations, customers can outfit their explorers to fit their passenger and cargo carrying needs.  with the v8 engine, the explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,310 pounds; that's about as much as a jeep grand cherokee with a hemi. And explorer is rated to carry up to 1,531 pounds of payload.  explorer has earned the best possible impact protection rating in the federal government's crash tests: five stars for the driver in a frontal impact, the front-seat passenger in a frontal impact, front-seat occupants in a side impact, and rear-seat occupants in a side impact, according to the national highway traffic safety administration's 2006 model year new car assessment program. Ford says the explorer is designed to meet all known federal frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through 2010.  for 2008, ford adds new standard and optional features. Side curtain airbags are standard on 2008 models, voice activation is added to the optional navigation system, and top-line limited models get standard power adjustable pedals and a universal garage door opener. Explorer's truck-based chassis gives it towing capability, while its clever independent rear suspension smoothes the ride for back-seat passengers. lineupthe 2008 ford explorer lineup comprises the xlt 2wd 25,755), xlt 4wd 28,050), eddie bauer 2wd 28,100), eddie bauer 4wd 30,395), limited 2wd 31,870), and limited 4wd 34,165). All are available with the standard 4. 0-liter v6 and five-speed automatic transmission or an optional 4. 6-liter v8 with a six-speed automatic 1,295). The audiophile stereo 510) and sirius satellite radio 195) with six-month subscription are available separately. Power retracting running boards are optional for eddie bauer and limited 695). Later in the model year, 20-inch wheels, capless fueling, and ford sync will be offered.  seating choices include a manually folding third-row seat 875) on xlt and eddie bauer, standard on limited. A power-folding third row is available on eddie bauer 1,370) and limited 495). The third-row seat comes standard on the limited, but can be deleted for credit (-$375), providing a flatter cargo floor.  safety features standard on. walkaroundup front, ford explorer looks like an f-150 pickup with finer, scaled-down features. At the same time, its generous use of chrome, big-and-bold lamps, and square-cornered aero mirrors make this latest-generation explorer look more like a lexus suv than a ford, and we mean that in the most complimentary way.  between the elaborate lamps front and back, however, explorer is a big, empty box with five large doors and a whole bunch of space inside.  each explorer trim level presents its own visual personality. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield.  the seats are supportive and comfortable. The colors and trims are elegant and tasteful, and the use of metallic trim is not overdone.  second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench with recline adjustment, or as two captain's chairs with fold-down armrests and a center console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo.  the third row, when ordered, is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding.  the cargo floor is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise. The five-seater has slightly more room with the seats folded.  the dvd-based navigation system is very easy to use, with excellent colors and graphics, and a big eight-inch display. For 2008, it can now be operated via voice commands.  ford's sync communications and entertainment system, due late in the 2008 model year, can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players. Voice commands and/or steering wheel buttons can be used to control all functions.  the rear-seat entertainment system's drop-down screen seems small a bit small. When in position for viewing, the video screen combines with the rear head restraints to block the driver's view to the rear. Outward visibility elsewhere is good, with less obstruction than expected from the thick c-pillars.  we don't care for the door handles. Ford designed the interior door panels so the armrests and door pulls would supplement the impact protection hardware built into the door's innards. Thus, the armrests and door pulls were separated, with the pulls positioned below the armrests. This poor ergonomic positioning makes i.

2006 ford escape hybrid review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale.

2003 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, smoother, more comfortable, more convenient. introductionford has launched an all-new expedition. This second-generation model shares almost nothing with last year's model. It's packed with new features, but the biggest improvement is its ride quality, a benefit of a new independent rear suspension.  when i last drove the expedition, it was for a long comparison test with one of its prime competitors. My fatigued co-tester was eager to trade vehicles with me. Indeed, keeping the giant sport utility, with its darty steering, sloppy suspension and rough ride, on the straight and narrow was tough duty. A driver could comfortably stay behind the wheel for the entire trip without fatigue, and the expedition would have a great shot at beating competitors in a comparison test. That's how much better the 2003 model is over its predecessor. Ride and handling are greatly improved, the steering is more responsive and more stable on the open road.  new features for the 2003 expedition include a power third-row seat that disappears with the press of a button, leaving a large, perfectly flat cargo area. The interior is all new. A small center seat on the second row slides forward to give front-seat parents access to a small child. Safety is enhanced with a lower front bumper, an optional safety curtain designed to protect occupants in a rollover, adjustable pedals, a tire-pressure monitor, and advanced electronics designed to help the driver maintain control.  the ford expedition and lincoln navigator full-size sport utilities were originally introduced as 1997 models for people who needed three rows of seats like a minivan but wanted to trade the soccer-mom image for the rugged, outdoorsy appearance of an suv. At that time, few competitors existed, primarily the chevrolet suburban and other full-size utilities from general motors. Toyota has since added the sequoia, and gm has launched additional iterations of its full-size and almost full-size sport utilities.  . lineupa choice of engines is offered in the expedition: the standard 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 232 horsepower and the 5. 4-liter v8 that produces 291 horsepower. The xlt is equipped well.  eddie bauer adds front captain's chairs with two tone-leather and 6-way driver power, automatic climate control with rear a/c, a premium sound system, arizona beige lower body side cladding, floor console, overhead console, 11 cup holders, fog lights, privacy glass with power flip-open rear windows, satin nickel grille, homelink, electrochromic mirror, power outside heated mirrors with memory, security approach lamps and integrated turn signals, power adjustable pedals with memory, power driver's seat with memory, reverse sensing system, black non-illuminated running boards.  expedition prices run a wide range: xlt 2wd 30,555); xlt 4wd 33,425); eddie bauer 2wd 37,050); eddie bauer 4wd 41,195). Numerous packages are available for the xlt. A fully loaded eddie bauer edition goes for nearly $45,000.  an fx4 off-road package 4,185) is available on xlt models that features distinctive exterior cues that give it a more rugged appearance, including tubular steel running boards, foglamps, an fx4 badge on the liftgate. Unique 17-inch chromed steel wheels and all-terrain tires complement special shocks tuned for off-road performance.  . walkaroundin spite of all the changes underneath, there is little to visually distinguish the new 2003 ford expedition over the 2002 model. A new expedition owner may be unhappy when the neighbors don't notice they've traded the old one in for the new model. Then again, maybe not. Auto companies have found it doesn't always pay to mess with winning formulas.  with roughly the same overall dimensions as before, the new expedition looks bigger and bolder than its predecessor. The track has been widened nearly two inches to give it a well-planted stance. The standard wheels increased to 17 inches for a bolder look. The roof height is lower. Bumpers are integrated more smoothly into the overall design. Previously, the expedition's interior was virtually identical to the lincoln navigator and the ford f-150 pickup trucks upon which they are based. In this new generation, however, distinctions have been made. The navigator is far fancier than the expedition, which, while quite refined, has a more outdoorsy, everyday workhorse ambiance.  the ford expedition's interior is dressed up with a metallic satin finish on such items as the rings that surround the vents and door handles. Shapes are round, and controls are hefty for an easy grip.  storage space is generous. The front center console available in some versions of the expedition can fit a small laptop computer. The console has a slot to hold pens and a palm pilot or other pdas. The lighter colors used for the upholstery give it a lighter, more car-like air.  the interior features a number of clever and useful innovations, some of them industry firsts. The third-row seat splits 60-40. Push a button on the wall of the cargo area, and one side powers down. Hold down the other button, and the other side powers down. The honda odyssey minivan introduced the fold-flat third-row seat, which is accomplished simply in a non high-tech fashion by pulling a couple of straps. The power-down buttons are more convenient. One side did not power up without a hand because the headrest didn't retract fully, creating too snug a fit against the second row seatback. We assume this has been addressed in production.  when folded down, the cargo floor is perfectly flat, in contrast to some expedition competitors who say the floor folds flat but actually slant. The flat floor combined with the flaps that cover the gap where the seats hinge make it easy to slide objects in and out. It proved invaluable during a variety of typical weekend chores. We changed the expedition repeatedly from a people hauler to a cargo hauler and back again with just a simple push of the button. After dumping that off, a pack of teenagers piled in to go to a punk rock concert. The third row is comfortable enough for a couple of full-size adults. The next day we picked up a high-backed wicker chair from the furniture store.  the second row features a clever feature ford claims is another industry first. The bench seat splits roughly into thirds. The middle section moves forward by about 11 inches, almost abutting it to the back of the front center console. That gives front-seat parents access to a small child or a child in a safety seat. The small center seatback can also be folded down and used as a work surface. The two outboard second-row seats fold easily forward for access to the third-row seat.  the expedition can be outfitted with enough safety equipment to create a cocoon inside in case of an accident. Dual-stage front airbags are standard. The expedition is now outfitted with an independent rear suspension. The suspension, combined with a stiffer chassis, gives the expedition dramatically improved ride and handling. It makes the expedition feel far smaller than the large vehicle it is.  ford introduced a similar independent suspension on the 2002 explorer, but it's more common to cars than trucks. The efficient packaging of the independent rear suspension made it possible for ford engineers to accomplish a fold-flat third-row seat.  yet, the expedition doesn't sacrifice its truck-like capabilities. It still carries heavy loads and tows trailers and boats with the best of them.  another major mechanical improvement to the expedition was the switch to the more car-like rack-and-pinion steering system. The change significantly improves steering response. The new expedition requires only small inputs to the steering wheel, to which it answers immediately.  . summarythe all-. 1998 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big, handsome and hard to get. introductionford has touted itself as the 'better idea' company in years past. Its biggest better idea to date, the massive expedition, may well be considered a best idea, judging from the horde of cash-in-hand customers queuing up at ford dealerships. Those wishing to purchase a navigator should expect to wait for awhile to get one.  why is the expedition so successful? We think its success goes beyond the current enthusiasm for large sport-utilities. And we think it goes beyond the shortage of contenders; only the gmc and chevrolet suburbans compete in this big size class. We think the expedition is selling like hot cakes because it does everything it was designed to do and it does it well. Its good looks certainly don't hurt, either.  this year does not bring major changes to the expedition because it is only in its second year of production. And the folks at ford wouldn't want to change a thing. In fact, the only things setting the 1998 version apart from its predecessor are the availability of some additional paint colors. The expedition has also been certified as a low-emissions vehicle in states that have adopted california's tougher emissions regulations. walkaroundthe stylists at ford took a sensible approach when they set out to give shape to the expedition. They already had two winners to their credit--the f-150 pickup and the explorer. So they borrowed the best elements from each to create another success. From nose to windshield, the expedition shares sheet metal with the f-150. No panels interchange between expedition and explorer, but the resemblance is unmistakable.  this combination of ingredients works well. The expedition is handsome, with a sloping hoodline and rounded front end that reflect attention paid to aerodynamic design. It's a design that pays off with improved fuel efficiency and reduced wind noise. As a matter of necessity, the sides and back are shaped more for utility than style. Clever use of trim and rounded corners provides some visual definition, however.  stretching more than 17 feet from nose to tail, the expedition is certainly no compact. And there's no way to disguise that. Gm's suburban is even longer, adding a foot-and-a-half to the total. With little demand for plain, entry-level vehicle in this class, ford equips the xlt well and the eddie bauer even better. Differences between xlt and eddie bauer are confined to paint and trim. Two seating configurations are available. Ordered with front bucket seats and a center bench, the expedition can comfortably haul five passengers. Ordered with the front full-width seat and center bench makes room for six passengers. Well-padded chairs provide comfortable seating.  adding the optional third-row bench provides seating for two more passengers--three if they are small. First- and second-row occupants get separate heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls; a third set of controls for the third seat is optional.  a curved dashboard houses instruments and controls where they can easily be reached. The eddie bauer roof console adds a digital display that provides the date and time, average fuel economy, compass headings, along with a switch for the power swing-out rear quarter windows.  attractive and durable materials are used throughout the expedition's cabin. Soft-touch coverings are applied to switches and door panels. Surprisingly, its bulk doesn't make it especially difficult to drive. Speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering works in the driver's favor by keeping steering effort down to a reasonable level. Brake pedal feel is light, yet precise. Lots of large windows, along with big mirrors, make it easy to see in all directions. Extra care and attention is required when maneuvering in close-quarters, however.  the ride quality is good, though it is not as soft as that of a traditional family sedan or wagon. An advantage of the expedition's long wheelbase is a resistance to pitching over freeway expansion joints and other irregularities. Built into the system is a one-inch increase in ride height. While serious rock-climbing is not suggested, occasional forays off the beaten path can be undertaken without fear of being left stranded. They are identical save for displacement. They are smooth and quiet. We recommend the larger unit, which delivers extra pulling power for full passenger loads and heavy trailers. Its blend of strength, refinement, comfort, good road manners and exceptional finish quality is not matched by the suburban, at least for now. The expedition will haul almost anything one might put in a pickup truck, assuming the owner is willing to soil the plush carpet. It will carry a large family in limousine-like splendor, pull a trailer or explore places beyond pavement's end. Power Windows✔ Bucket Seats✔ Air Conditioning✔ Alloy Wheels

2006 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. By careful, we mean ford spent serious effort dotting the i's and crossing the t's, looking after the details that make all the difference. At the same time, ford realigned the models and overhauled the pricing structure, giving customers more truck for less money, nearly $4,000 less in some cases.  the new explorer is available with a v6 or v8. It's a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction, and competes against the chevrolet trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder.  we were well pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes used on the 2006 model, all of which have improved by at least one order of magnitude. The new 2006 explorer is quieter than last year's model and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter than on last year's models and the interior has been improved throughout. lineupthe explorer lineup from bottom to top includes the xls 27,175), xlt 28,870), xlt sport 30,845), eddie bauer 30,845), and limited 33,160), with all prices reflecting the inclusion of the $645 destination and delivery charges. Ford is quick to point out that these suggested retail prices are from $675 to $3,900 lower than those for comparably equipped 2005 models, which don't benefit from all the improvements for 2006. The average price reduction is $1,750.  standard equipment on the xls includes the 4. 0-liter v6 engine and five-speed automatic, roll stability control (rsc), independent rear suspension, keyless entry, cruise control, message center, compass and thermometer, power windows, locks and mirrors, air conditioning, a floor console, rear vent windows and added 12-volt power point, a cargo management system, am/fm stereo with single cd or mp3 player, driver manual lumbar adjuster, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.  xlt adds a chrome grille, unique bumper and trim, power seat, fog lamps, puddle lamps, 16-inch tires and wheels, an overhead console and additional storage.  the eddie bauer version adds yet another grille design, running boards, roof rails, 17-inch wheels and tires, more wood and leather, 10-way power seat, message center and trip computer, and remote keyless entry. The eddie bauer is now split into two models, one with the luxury package added in and one without. The five-seater gains a flat load floor behind the second row of folding seats. Sirius satellite radio will be offered late in the model year. Dvd-based navigation is also available for about $1,500.  the standard safety package includes the automatic all-wheel-drive system and roll stability control, a system already in use at volvo and land rover, that intervenes with throttle and brakes when the vehicle senses an impending tipover situation. Seat side air bags, an new adaptive energy-absorbing steering column, a passenger classifier in the seat, and the tpms. Ford says this truck meets all known future safety standard for front and side crash through 2010. walkaroundthe new 2006 ford explorer looks like the f-150 pickup in front, with finer, scaled-down features. With the v8 engine, the new explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds. And it's rated to carry up to 1,500 pounds of payload. interioreverything inside the explorer is new for 2006. Every switch, button, face, texture and panel of the interior has been changed, changed to a much more modern, crisper presentation, one of ford design boss j mays's personal design campaigns brought to life. There is a dark wood for most models and darker, richer wood for the eddie bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte, depending. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield of the early models we drove.  second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench seat, a 60/40 split bench with recline and third-row access, or two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo.  the third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than before so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding.  and now the floor really is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 before). The armrest is very large and filled with foam to assist in side crash protection, with the chrome latch pull rounded around the leading edge, but the door handle is buried underneath it, where the human wrist cannot comfortably go. Otherwise, the new explorer interior works very well.  the new seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than the old, hard explorer seats, the colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone. driving impressiontwo new engines are available for the 2006 ford explorer. The 4. 0-liter single-overhead-cam v6 has been retuned with variable valve timing and is rated at 210 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Both powertrains are quiet and smooth. The lighter v6 is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both are very pleasant, competent and quiet rides.  ford told us before we drove the truck that customers had demanded quieter operation from the new explorer, so they have used the body-on-frame design to maximum advantage to quiet the truck down, isolate it from the road, and halt the transmission of noise and vibration. In this respect, ford has done an exemplary job on the new truck. The ac system operates with 30 percent less noise yet moves and exchanges more air. Conversations are easily heard, the music sounds good, and the mirrors, with their new square corners defying aero logic, are mercifully quiet, as are the tires.  this is a big, heavy family truck with 15 years of continuous sales success and a few dark episodes behind it (involving previous-generation models), so they have utterly bathed it in safety equipment, from standard roll stability control (also used in volvo, land rover, and other ford truck products) to smart air bags to side air bags to an air curtain setup for the second and third rows. Ford says it expects a full house of five-star safety ratings, the highest possible, when the truck is tested.  the new steering on the 2006 explorer has a much heftier feel at highway speeds with plenty of assist for parking. The new suspension is one of the most supple we've driven on any suv in this big class. And the new brakes work much harder with much less pedal pressure and travel than before. Body roll is much better (the explorer leans less in corners), and the general feeling of being planted on earth is stronger on this new chassis. The new chassis is some 63-percent stiffer than before, and a stiff chassis is a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. This truck manages to be isolated from the road, but well connected to it, at the same time. summaryford is a lot better at trucks than cars these days, and with the new explorer, they have shown just how good they.
