There are regular cab and supercab versions; shortbed (6 ft.) and longbed (7 ft.) models; the choice of 2-wheel drive or 4wd; base and uplevel trim packages (xl, xlt and stx); and the sporty flareside splash, with its stepside bed fabricated from composites rather than sheet steel. new this year is a flareside pickup box option for both the ranger xl and xlt regular and supercab models, available only with 2wd 4-cyl. Models. depending on the model, ranger pickups can accommodate anywhere from two to five passengers. For instance, the ranger is the first compact pickup truck to offer an optional passenger airbag to complement its standard driver's airbag. And, like its f-150 big brother, it has an added safety feature. To accommodate a rear-facing child seat, the passenger airbag can be deactivated with a key-operated dashboard switch. civilization is steadily overtaking the compact pickup class, a trend that's reflected in the ranger's list of standard and optional features. Driven primarily as image vehicles, they have to satisfy owners who expect passenger car features and comfort. walkaroundredesigned three years ago, the ranger's exterior styling--with the exception of the splash--is subdued and a little more traditional than the rounded look of gm's gmc sonoma and chevy s-series trucks. Each engine is available with a 5-speed manual transmission or optional 4-speed automatic. All specify 100,000-mile tuneup intervals, something that's new for the 4-cyl. This 4x4 model also has wheel flares and sporty aluminum alloy wheels. For '96, the p235/75r-15 tires have a new compound and new tread pattern to improve traction. the supercab has a wheelbase that is nearly 20 in. Longer than standard cab models with a standard cargo bed, and it's 15 in. The cargo box is 6 ft. And can accommodate a 4x8-ft. Sheet of building material riding above the wheelwells with the tailgate down. interiorthe interior makeover of the ranger has come about in two recent phases--'93 and '95--and for '96 it remains a carryover with the exception of the optional passenger airbag. In '95, designers created a more user-friendly instrument panel along with new seat materials. it's a relatively easy in and out of the ranger supercab, although, as is the case with most 4wd trucks, vertically-challenged drivers looking for a driver-side grab handle have to settle for the steering wheel to hoist themselves up. we found the gray cloth seats comfortable and appreciated the clear visibility that comes from the ranger's tall seating postion, ample glass, narrow a and b pillars and unobstructed rear view. the front seating positions have good head, leg, shoulder and hip room. This space is a much better place for things than people. however, the pivoting quarter windows and sliding rear window are useful for dialing in just the right flow of fresh air when the weather permits. gm's new third-door option on its extended cab sonoma and s-series trucks makes the space behind the front seats easier to use than the ranger supercab, and we expect to see a similar option in the next ranger redesign. the ranger's seats are newly fitted with automatic locking restraint/emergency locking restraint (alr/elr) belt systems that eliminate child seat clips and comply with new federal safety regulations. While there's a real globebox--non-locking--for some stowage, the door pockets are low and lilliputian. A rear cargo net is handy for keeping small items from thrashing around in the back of the cab. driving impressionthe ranger is a straightforward, easy-to-drive truck. We particularly appreciated the dash-mounted electric transfer case which shifts from 2wd to 4wd high to 4wd low with a simple flip of a switch--no more wrestling with a separate shift lever to engage the 4wd system. while the supercab's longer wheelbase smooths the highway ride on this truck, its longer dimensions make it a little less nimble off road. All in all, this is definitely a good light-duty workhorse on and off the pavement. we found the recirculating ball power steering to be precise and the twin i-beam front and rear leaf spring suspension gave a ride that felt solid and stable, considering the ranger's somewhat tall and narrow body dimensions. Models equipped with the 4. 0-liter v6 get 4-wheel abs, a definite plus. We think it's worth it. however, we should also note that the ranger price scale starts well below this figure. A new diesel engine and a new f-450 pickup are designed to handle the needs of ever-increasing agricultural, boat, and rv trailer weights. Other revisions and refinements are designed to address customer comment and stricter emissions standards. two words can define the 2008 super duty relative to the previous iteration: refined and more. With realistic expectations, any faults will seem minute when compared to the ability to plow a big parking lot, carry a small car or tow a small house. the 2008 super duty is not an all-new truck. Some body panels, engines and transmissions continue. But many aspects more substantial than the front-end styling have changed. It has a new interior in five different flavors from hose-out to leather lux, a new diesel engine, more added features, and should cost less based on equipment than the outgoing model. and in a first for any major pickup manufacturer ford has added a medium-duty pickup, the f-450, to the line. The super duty line can haul from one ton to three. It can tow from three tons to more than twelve. It can carry three to six real-world people with room to spare. And the door pockets, glovebox, and console will hold more stuff than some sports cars' trunks. Almost every permutation is built. Exceptions: the king ranch version is offered only on crew cabs, the f-450 is long-bed crew cab only, and the fx4 trim is not offered on 2wd, any f-450, or with a regular cab. a 5. 4-liter v8 with 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque is standard on all models up to the f-350 crew cab drw, which has the 362-hp, 457 lb-ft 6. 8-liter v10 standard. Both the v10 and 6. 4-liter diesel (350 hp, 650 lb-ft) are optional across the f-250/f-350 spectrum, but the diesel is the only engine offered on f-450. A six-speed manual is standard, a five-speed automatic available. the base xl is commercial in nature, with vinyl seats and flooring, black painted grille and bumpers, plain trim, am/fm stereo, and a weight-appropriate receiver hitch. Options include mechanical upgrades (engine, limited-slip differential, larger tires, traction control, camper package, off-road package for 4wd, tow command, etc.), air conditioning, auxiliary switches, reverse sensors, and a tailgate step. xlt trim adds chrome trim and wheels, 40/20/40 cloth front seat, carpet, ac, cd player, power windows/locks/mirrors, tilt wheel and cruise control. Options include aluminum wheels, captain's chairs w/power and heat, audiophile sound system, adjustable pedals, sport trim package, moonroof, and rear-seat dvd entertainment. the fx4 off-road model adds 18-inch wheels and lt275/70r18 all-terrain tires, standard limited-slip, skid plates, fog lamps, security system, overhead console, and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Options include 20-inch wheels, navigation/audiophile system, sirius radio, and power telescope/fold heated dual-element towing mirrors. lariat trim (n/a on regular cabs) adds polished wheels, leather power seats, dual-zone climate control, trip computer, redundant sound/climate controls on wheel, woodgrain trim, illuminated visor mirrors, privacy glass and a sliding rear window. Dimensions are easily given in yards rather than inches. The color of the side vent gives away if it is gasoline or diesel-powered. given its fender flares and dark snout, the fx4 is the most aggressive trim style, though no super duty would be mistaken for anything less than a full-size pickup even with nothing scalable within sight. New towing mirrors include signal repeaters that won't distract the driver; they telescope and fold (manual or powered), and include two large reflective elements for safe rear vision with the widest street-legal trailers. an optional tailgate step pops a 16. 7 x 4. 5-inch step with a half-ton load rating out of the tailgate and raises a grab handle rated at 300 pounds to make the climb safer. It also includes an assist so the very heavy tailgate feels less heavy. The handle makes bed access easier but may need to be lowered again to slide a load in, and removing the gate, as is often the case with some trailers, may become a two-person chore. interiorwith three-and-a-half feet of headroom and just shy of six feet of shoulder room, the ford super duty cab is massive. Materials are job appropriate: no carpet mats for commercial or trail duty, and appear well assembled. The king ranch version brings a little lincoln to a pickup while the base model could be cleaned out with a bucket of warm water. On upper-end models, the gear-cog-like chrome surrounds for vents and gauges can create some unwelcome reflections, and the number of textures and colors (we counted up to eight) may be too much for design minimalists. the interior has been restyled for 2008. The dash is now segmented in three smaller parts for a more manageable look. The center stack houses a pair of large vents, radio and navigation top center where easily viewed, climate control, and most switchgear. Side steps are available. We noted a marked reduction in wind/cab noise around the center pillar in the supercab, and the better sealing means that big front door requires a solid yank to close with all windows up. The short shifter for the automatic is less effort but more precise than before. The headlights can be turned off for good neighborly night-time entries to campgrounds or drive-ins. the ventilation system is capable of cooling or heating the cavernous volume and keeping forward windows and mirrors clear, and seat heaters are very effective; a supplemental cab heater is available for diesel models. the navigation system is fairly intuitive and will be familiar to ford family drivers. ford's tow command integrated trailer brake system is easy to set up and provides better, smoother trailer braking control than any aftermarket controller.

With nearly 900,000 annual sales, the f-150 has been the best-selling vehicle (car or truck) in america for 21 consecutive years. now, they've thrown away the old formula and created a brand new f-150 from the ground up. ford admits the new f-150 is bigger, heavier, and more expensive to build than the wildly successful previous version. It is also the best-handling, quietest, most car-like full-size pickup truck in the history of the world. All of the new f-150 models feature all-new interiors that show attention to detail. The seats vary, but all are comfortable and supportive. Each boasts its own interior style and features engines, suspensions and cab configurations designed to meet specific needs. It features an all-new work-truck interior and comes with all the basics such as 40/20/40 bench seats in vinyl or cloth, an all-plastic dashboard, a black grille and 17-inch steel wheels. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab styles. An f-150 xl regular cab 2wd automatic retails for $21,215, while a long-wheelbase (145-inch) 4x4 is priced at $24,855. stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. An stx starts at $22,215. Xlt supercab 4x4 4. 6-liter v8 automatic retails for $30,085 msrp. fx4 is a specialty 4x4 off-road model. Fx4 comes only in a stepside version with special chrome interior trim and markings, and a floor console with floor shifter. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab and supercrew body styles with either 5. 5-foot styleside or 6. 5-foot flareside or styleside bed designs (no 8-foot bed). The standard engine is the 300-horsepower 5. 4-liter 3-valve-per-cylinder v8, which ford says has the best fuel consumption of any v8 engine it has ever built. The fx4 has its own instrument package as do the rest of the models, with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather and the audiophile system are optional, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are optional. An f-150 fx4 supercab 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $32,185. lariat is the luxury model and, for the time being, sits at the top of the line. Lariat has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. It amplifies the all-new interior with black-on-cream instrumentation, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. The nearest competitor has only 12 variations, a fact that ford hopes will bring more people into its dealerships. In addition to the 26 variants of the f-150 within the five model ranges, there are dozens of options,. walkaroundall ford f-150s now have the front window style popularized on the f-250 and f-350 super duty pickups: a sharp cut in the forward part of the door sheet metal that drops away to allow much clearer viewing of the large rearview mirrors on both sides. the whole nose is shaped more squarely, the grilles are larger and bolder, the bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is more sculpted, and every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. It's the seven-crossmember skeleton onto which everything else bolts, and accounts for quite a bit of the nearly 675 pounds more weight of the new f-150 compared to the old truck. The frame is nine times more resistant to twisting and 50 percent more resistant to bending than the old c-shaped frame. the front suspension is a completely new double-wishbone style for both 2wd and 4wd versions. The rear suspension now has outboard, rather than inboard, shock absorbers to control the rear end of the truck better in quick maneuvers, along with wider, heavier three-inch leaf springs. the steering has been changed to a heavy-duty power-assisted rack-and-pinion system. The ford truck folks committed only one unpardonable by us: the clear plastic over the instrument pod is way, way too reflective and makes most of the instruments difficult to see in bright sunlight. Ford says that, between these two things, the 5. 4-liter engine, which makes a nice, round 300 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque, is also the fuel-stingiest engine the company has ever tested. For 2011, ford f-150 features an entirely new engine lineup, and most 2011 f-150 models come with electric-assist steering. smooth and quiet, the f-150 is comfortable on bumpy streets around town, over rugged terrain like construction sites, farms and utility roads, and on the open highway. Its steering is nicely weighted and requires little correction on the highway making it nice for long cross-country tows. Yet even the least-expensive f-150 isn't boring; it leaves room for customization, does the work required and keeps overhead down. with one of the deepest beds in the segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,060 pounds; most versions carry 1,600-2,100 pounds. Any cab model f-150 can be optioned to tow more than 11,000 pounds; the range varies from 5,500-11,300 pounds. (the ford super duty line of heavy-duty pickups is covered in a separate new car test drive review.) two v8 and two v6 engines are offered, all with six-speed automatic transmissions. Standard on 2wd is a 302-hp 3. 7-liter v6. Other choices include a 360-hp 5-liter v8 for all cab/bed configurations, a 411-hp 6. 2-liter v8 on supercrew short beds, and a 365-hp twin-turbo 3. 5-liter v6 on all but regular cab/short beds.
