2008 saturn astra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New saturn is gm's best small car. introductionthe saturn astra is an all-new car. At least it's new to the american automotive landscape: astra has been offered for years in europe under the opel flag, where it's been giving the vw golf a run for top-seller bragging rights. The new astra is so much better in every respect than the saturn model it replaces that we've forgotten the earlier compact's name.  the astra comes in two body styles, both hatchbacks designed for practicality and built on the same chassis. There's a three-door version that is lower in overall height than the five-door version, but otherwise they share the same outside dimensions. This package was developed on european roadways where performance is measured more by balance at speed than how fast it accelerates away from an intersection. Pricing fits that aspect too, running from under $16,000 to about $21,000 for a fully loaded model.  it's also a good do-it-all kind of car: cart around a batch of kids, shuttle around town or cover big commuting miles, fill with a lot of school debris, or make a good basis for a pocket rocket like the gti, civic si, or mazdaspeed3. Air conditioning is not standard. Xe options include air conditioning 960), automatic 1,325), alloy wheels 350), stability control 495), two-panel sunroof 1,000) and heated front seats 250).  the xr five-door 16,925) adds air conditioning, seven-speaker mp3 stereo with steering-wheel controls, alloy wheels and fog lamps. Except the ac and wheels, single options are the same as xe. Sport seats and upgraded instruments join the other features in the xr five-door sport handling group. Options include the automatic 1,325), 18-inch alloy wheels and performance tires 495), and heated front seats. Package groups are the premium trim 745) and advanced audio from the five-door.\  safety features standard on all astras include frontal, front side-impact, and side curtain airbags, one year of onstar safe & sound with accident notification, active front headrests, abs, traction control, and tire pressure monitors. Electronic stability control is standard on the three-door and optional on five-doors; we recommend opting for it because it can reduce skidding. White parking light bulbs belie the european heritage, as do simple yet stylish side signal repeaters that appear chrome jewelry until switched on when a signal can be seen anywhere on the side of the car, not just ahead of more vulnerable mirror-mounted devices.  the lack of visual clutter and cladding should be welcome by all from the rust belt to the southern border; excess chrome is reserved mainly for badges and the horizontal trim front and rear.  rear panel styling echoes the front with a recessed panel in the hatch split by trim and the license plate in another recess in the bumper; since they're all hatchbacks, all astras have rear wipers for better wet weather visibility.  on the three-door, the window line arcs downward from about two-thirds through the front door; the earlier ford focus hatchback will come to mind as similar. The five-door has a similar look to the ends, although the rear is more upright to make full use of the footprint. The rear-door opening angles up and rearward from the wheel and, instead of reversing direction at the glass line, it keeps going up and aft to the top of the glass. Since the door opening matches the seated position of rear seat riders, this pays big dividends in getting into and out of, and seeing out of, the rear seat.  perhaps not as stylish or unique as the saturn sky roadster, the saturn astra is still distinctive and has visual appeal. A lighter headliner and lots of glass keep the cabin fairly light and airy for the primarily dark color scheme. American drivers might have to make two minor adaptations, one using the icon bc, which stands for on-board computer for trip data, the other being electronic controls of wipers and signals that always have the stalk at its default or standard resting position. The back seat is better used for two adults or three children. The five-door will accommodate six-footers front and rear simultaneously. 2004 saturn ion review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Minor revisions add to its appeal. introductionsaturn ion is an inexpensive compact that emphasizes style and innovation as well as value. Ion was all-new in 2003, and significantly larger than the saturn s-series model it replaced.  the 2004 saturn ion features some significant updates, including higher-grade interior fabrics and richer-looking interior trim in more harmonious colors. Additional sound-deadening material brings a quieter cabin. The stereo systems have been improved and is available with an mp3 player, xm satellite radio, and a six-cd changer.  ion's steering has been re-calibrated for improved road feel at speed. Both of the available automatic transmissions have been refined as well. And saturn has injected some real excitement into the ion for 2004, with the uniquely trimmed special edition sedan, and the supercharged red line coupe.  dent-deflecting and rust-resistant plastic body panels add to the ion's appeal. Acceleration is good for its price class, ride and handling about average. In interior comfort and refinement, saturn still has a way to go. But experience has shown that people choose saturns as much for the hassle-free buying experience as the for car's actual character and performance. In fact, saturn ranks at or near the top in j. Saturn calls the coupe a quad coupe. Picture the door arrangement on an extended-cab pickup, but with a lot more style.  the sedan is offered in three trim levels. The coupe is available in the upper two levels. A five-speed manual transmission is standard. Automatic transmissions are available 900-$980), but saturn installs different units in the sedan and the coupe. Sedans use a five-speed automatic, which is unusual in this price range. The windows wind and the mirrors adjust manually. Air conditioning costs extra 960).  ion 2 sedan 13,735) and coupe 14,285) add air conditioning, a cd player, a more deluxe interior with a driver's seat that adjusts for height, and 195/60 tires on 15-inch aluminum wheels.  ion 3 sedan 15,260) and coupe 15,785) add an mp3 player and better speakers, cruise control, power programmable door locks with remote keyless entry, power windows and mirrors, and other niceties, plus 205/55 tires on 16-inch aluminum wheels.  two additional variations debut for 2004. The special edition sedan comes only in black, with machined 16-inch alloy wheels and a chrome exhaust tip. Inside, the special edition is trimmed in perforated neutral leather with ebony accents. Additional standard equipment includes an automatic-dimming mirror, compass, outside temperature gauge, map lights, and unique floor-mat embroidery.  the red line coupe, available late in the model year, boasts 200 horsepower from a supercharged and intercooled 2. 0-liter engine. Head curtain air bags 395) that protect both front and rear-seat passengers in a side impact are an unusual option in this price class, and we recommend them as well.  cd and cd/mp3 systems are available on ion 1 and ion 2. Xm satellite radio and onstar are offered at levels 2 and 3. A convenience package 825) adds cruise control plus power locks, mirrors, and windows to ion 2. A power sunroof 725) is offered on all models except the ion 1 sedan. Leather upholstery 700) is available on ion 3. walkaroundstylish yet recognizable, the saturn ion sedan drew favorable comments on the street. From the front, the ion retains the saturn family look with slim horizontal headlamps and the saturn name embossed in the bumpers. The windshield slopes far forward, which helps the relatively tall ion look sleek.  ion does, in fact, stand tall. The ion sedan's roof curves heavily down to the high trunk line almost giving it the appearance of a hatchback rather than a traditional sedan. The look is contemporary and not that dissimilar from the nissan altima and volkswagen passat, both lauded for their design.  ion maintains the saturn tradition of attaching composite polymer body panels to a substantial steel space-frame. The polymer panels can't rust and, because they are slightly resilient, they resist the minor impacts that leave small dents and dings in sheet metal. The down side is that the saturn's panels look thicker than steel sheet and gaps between body parts have to be greater to allow for expansion in hot weather. Another benefit of the composite panels is that they are relatively easy to replace. Saturn has exploited this advantage on the ion by offering alternatively colored roof rails that owners can easily install to customize their car's appearance. All 2004 ions come with body-color roof rails, but nickel-silver rails are available for the coupe and the sedan, and charcoal rails are available for the sedan.  one complaint: we find the ion's small, lever-style door handles relatively hard to grasp. Also, the front air dam adds to the sedan's sporty appearance, but scrapes like a corvette on steep driveway and side-street transitions.  the ion quad coupe derives its name from a pair of unusual rear-access doors that open on rear-mounted hinges, in much the same way as the auxiliary rear doors on an extended-cab pickup truck. The rear doors have no exterior handles to compromise the coupe's sporty styling; and when they are open, there's no b-pillar in the opening, which makes access to the rear seat very easy for such a small car. The rear access doors are an innovative design that enhances the practicality of this sport coupe. A front passenger seat that folds flat further improves the utility of the coupe. Saturn likes to demonstrate that it's possible to stuff a nine-foot kayak into the coupe through its doors, a feat that would be plenty tough for many suvs, let alone other compact coupes. Ion's interior design themes consist largely of interlocking half circles with different textures. These textures and other interior materials have been upgraded for 2004. New grains on the dash, soft-touch paint, and improved gloss levels of other plastics give the 2004 ion a more upscale appearance than the 2003 model. For those who want to customize the interior, the trim bezels can be swapped out.  the open dash design gives the ion an airy feel. Immediately noticeable is the center-mounted instrument cluster, a feature popularized by the mini cooper and toyota echo. The advantage of this, says saturn, is that the instruments can be set at the same level as the outside mirrors, so there's no need to look down, only across. This arrangement also allows for a smaller steering wheel with more range of adjustment, as there is no need to look through the steering wheel to see the gauges. Tall drivers find it convenient, but short drivers who sit nearer to the steering wheel have to swivel their heads farther to look across at the speedometer. Some people like the small steering wheel, but others do not love the ion's small, two-spoke wheel.  we do not like the front seats. They are on small, narrow and short, and lack side support in the seat bottom and seat back. Arm rests have been added to ion 2 and ion 3 trim levels for 2004, which may be helpful.  forward visibility is inhibited by thick a-pillars in front, while the view over the right shoulder is hindered by wide c-pillars. We found the electric window switches hard to locate in the dark, as they are not illuminated and are located rearward of where we expected them. Rear passengers benefit from slightly elevated (theater) seating, as the rear seats are mounted two inches higher than the front seats, offering an improved view. Rear-seat legroom is adequate, and the front seats have longer-than-normal adjustment rails, so short front-seat passengers can slide them well forward. This also means a taller person can enjoy even greater leg room in front as long as there are no passengers in the rear.  the coupe and the sedan feature a big trunk. The sedan's trunk is little larger.

2008 saturn outlook review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Comfortable crossover suv seats eight. introductionthe saturn outlook is a smooth-riding crossover suv with a powerful 3. 6-liter v6 engine and a smooth six-speed transmission. It seats up to eight. While a chevy tahoe is built on a pickup truck platform, the outlook is built with a unit-body chassis like that of a car. The outlook benefits from gm's latest 3. 6-liter v6 engine with variable valve timing; it's rated at 270 horsepower in the xe and 275 horsepower in the xr, thanks to its dual exhaust. Its six-speed automatic transmission provides good flexibility for good fuel efficiency and responsive performance.  the interior shows attention to detail, and the standard cloth seats are of a high quality and look stylish even in gray or black.  all the latest safety bits come as standard equipment, including large curtain airbags that protect the outboard passengers in all three rows of seating.  for 2008, there are few changes. Xm satellite radio is standard equipment and a 115-volt power outlet is available to provide house current for accessories. Also, a back-up camera is available that displays an image of what's behind the vehicle whenever the driver shifts into reverse, an excellent safety feature for its ability to help the driver spot small children. lineupthe 2008 saturn outlook comes in two models, xe and xr. Front-wheel-drive comes standard, all-wheel drive is optional 2000).  outlook xe 29,360) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, eight-passenger seating, cruise control, power locks, power windows, keyless entry, onstar for one year, driver information center, xm satellite radio for one year, am/fm/cd/mp3 with six speakers, 18-inch painted alloy wheels.  outlook xr 31,770) upgrades with dual-zone automatic climate control, wood grain interior trim, power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, universal garage door opener, 18-inch machined alloy wheels, foglights. Options include leather-trimmed seats for the first two rows with heated front seats 1275), and a navigation system 2145).  options for both models include a 10-speaker sound system 880), hid headlamps 500), captain's chairs with center console for the second row 495), preferred package 505) including power adjustable driver's seat and chrome roof rails, trailering package 425) including heavy-duty engine cooling system, harness and hitch, dvd entertainment system 1295), sunroof 1300), 19-inch chrome wheels 2029), crossbars for the roof rails 213), remote starter 235). Also available: a power liftgate and rearview back-up camera.  safety equipment on both models includes the dual-stage frontal airbags, side-impact airbags in front, full-length side curtain airbags, tire pressure monitor, abs, and stabilitrak electronic stability control. The optional rearview camera enhances safety when backing up. All-wheel drive improves safety in wintry conditions. The outlook has earned a five-star crash rating from nhtsa. walkaroundsaturn calls the outlook a mid-size suv, but it's bigger than most mid-size suvs and just slightly shorter than a chevy tahoe full-size suv.  the outlook looks sleek and modern, certainly by suv standards, though it doesn't have the boldness of the ford edge.  the grille with a wide chrome bar and saturn logo proudly announces itself, and stands out against a black background. The black air dam at the bottom slices a rigid horizontal line across the chin, and its contrast against the body color makes the fascia look like the edge of a cliff. Large trapezoidal openings for the foglamps look like wicked eyes a cartoonist might draw, and above them the similar-shaped headlamps fill the corners of the car; foglamps are unavailable on the xe, leaving big black holes there. A character groove down the center of the hood finishes it all off. In short, the outlook presents a good-looking face.  from the side, the nose is conspicuously short and rounded. The styling invites the eye rearward, as the roof sweeps straight back and appears as a thin sliver at its trailing edge. The dark rear glass takes over, wrapping around about 40 percent of the vehicle, finally stopped by a wide sloping c-pillar. The fender flares are fat, and the six-spoke alloy wheels are clean and unpretentious, with six beefy lugs in the hub.  at the rear, the outlook loses some of its style. The black dam matches the front, making the suv look like it has super high ground clearance. The taillights are ordinary, and the chrome over the license plate doesn't add anything. We find the look of the xe with its body-colored trim cleaner than the xr with its chromed door handles and roof rails. interiorthe saturn outlook features eight-passenger seating, and third-row seating is relatively generous. The 2008 honda pilot has 30. 2 inches. When we add the legroom of the second and third rows together, the outlook wins with 70. 1 inches, compared with tahoe's 64. 3 and pilot's 67. 6.  getting into the outlook is very easy, especially considering it doesn't have sliding doors. Access to the third row is much easier than in most vehicles, thanks to a design called smart slide. Using a massive lever on the either side of the 60/40 split seat, each side of the second row slides way forward on rails, and then the seatback tilts until it touches the back of the front seat. It's an easy one-handed operation, opening a wide path to the third row. Smart slide is also a feature of the optional captain's chairs.  cargo capacity with both rows folded is 116. 9 cubic feet. With the third row in place it's 68. 9 cubic feet, and behind the third row it's 19. 7 cubic feet. Those are healthy numbers. The third row easily folds flat, from either the second row or through the liftgate.  the rest of the outlook interior is aces. We really liked the xe cloth, though the leather-wrapped steering wheel in the xr is sweet. The wood trim in the xr is way prettier than that in gm's past, and the analog instruments are tidy. All the other things are present, and right. There are cup holders galore, a deep console compartment, dc and 115-volt ac outlets.  the center stack is attractive with nice climate controls. To gain interior space, the outlook uses a long wheelbase with short overhangs as well as a wide track. The overall weight of 4,700 pounds contributes to that smooth ride, though that weight pales in comparison to that of a 5500-pound tahoe.  the 3. 6-liter engine handles the weight, with 275 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. That torque peaks at a conveniently low 3200 rpm, so the acceleration happens early. While never felt the need for more power. The outlook's epa-rated 16/24 mpg city/highway (16/22 mpg with all-wheel drive) is comparable to that of the ford edge with its similar and comparable v6, but the edge is smaller and only seats five.  steering and handling is above averagefor a vehicle this size, a benefit of its car-like structure.  the six-speed automatic works well and usually left it in drive. We enjoyed using the manual feature and liked the tight gear changes.  the all-wheel-drive system sends 60 percent of the power to the front wheels and 40 percent to the rear on dry pavement, and adjusts that ratio when the sensors detect slipping. That 60-40 split is more balanced than most; some systems are heavily balanced to the front, some as much as 95-5. The outlook's system is better balanced than those.  it's not uncommon to detect a difference in the.

2003 saturn ion review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new model is more than a charged particle. introductionout with the old s-series, in with the new ion.  it's been 12 years since gm's saturn division first appeared on the automotive scene in an attempt to compete more effectively with japanese imports. Until now.  it didn't seem to matter terribly as people have chosen saturns as much for the hassle-free buying experience as the car's actual character and performance. In fact, saturn has been the only non-luxury make to ever top the j. Power and associates sales satisfaction index and was often ranked with such illustrious makes as lexus and infiniti.  for 2003, there's an all-new sedan and coupe. This time, saturn has given its entry models a name: ion. The ion replaces the s-series and sports all-new styling. It's built on an entirely new and bigger platform and it's powered by a new engine. Ion 3 is distinguished by 16-inch alloy wheels.  an optional five-speed automatic transmission adds $900 to the cost of each model. The optional automatic, however, is a continuously variable transmission, or cvt.  . walkaroundstylish yet recognizable, the new saturn ion sedan drew favorable comments on the street. From the front, the ion retains the saturn family look with slim horizontal headlamps and the saturn name embossed in the bumpers. The roof curves quite heavily down to the high trunk line almost giving it the appearance of a hatchback rather than a traditional sedan. The look is contemporary and not that dissimilar from the nissan altima and volkswagen passat. (that's a good thing.)  the ion continues with the saturn trademark of utilizing composite polymer body panels mounted on a substantial steel spaceframe. Advantages are rust resistance and resilience to dings and small dents. The disadvantage is that the panels look thicker than steel ones, and gaps between body parts have to be greater to allow for expansion in hot weather.  another advantage to the composite panels is that it they are relatively easy to replace. Saturn has taken this a step further with the ion by offering optional colored roof rails that run along the edge of the roof on each side so an owner can easily customize the car's appearance.  a front air dam adds to the ion sedan's sporty appearance but scrapes on abrupt transitions found on some driveways and side streets.  the coupe's unique feature is a pair of rear doors that give the car its quad coupe name. They are also called rear-access doors (rad) as they open out from the rear hinges in much the same way as on many crew cab pickup trucks. The absence of a b-pillar and a front seat that folds forward makes access to the rear very easy despite it being a small car. In fact saturn likes to demonstrate that it's possible to get a nine-foot kayak in the quad coupe through the doors, a feat that would be tough to do in many suvs, let alone a small compact coupe. The advantages, according to saturn are that the instruments are at the same level as the outside mirrors, which makes them easier to see when looking straight ahead. There's no need to look down, only across. They also allow for a smaller steering wheel with more adjustments, as there is no need to look through the steering wheel to see the gauges. The center-mounted speedometer gets mixed reviews. Tall drivers are likely to find it just as convenient as one mounted conventionally in front of the steering wheel. Short drivers, who sit nearer to the steering wheel, will have to turn their heads to look across to the speedometer.  ion's interior design themes consist largely of interlocking half circles with different textures available. In places it works well, but there are some parts where butting plastic panels look a little cheap. The open dash design gives the ion an airy feel.  we found the electric window switches a bit hard to locate in the dark as they are not illuminated and are located rearward of where we expected them, but at least they are conveniently mounted on the door and not on awkwardly on the center console as with previous saturn models. Rear passengers benefit from slightly elevated (theater) seating, as the seats are located two inches higher than the front seats, offering an improved view. Rear-seat legroom is adequate and if the front passengers are short the front seats can be slid far forward as they have longer seat rails than normal. This also means a taller person can enjoy even greater leg room in front as long as there are no passengers in the rear.  we did not like the front seats. They lacked side support, both on the seat bottom and on the seat back. Also, they are on the small side, narrow and short. At times, we felt like we were sitting on a padded bar stool, about to fall off. Indeed, with a capacity of nearly 15 cubic feet, and a practical shape, the trunk is bigger than any in its segment and is as big as those in many mid-size cars.  safety features include dual-stage driver and front-passenger airbags and optional curtain side-impact airbags for improved head protection for both front- and rear-seat passengers. Onstar, gm's telematics system for emergency use and for obtaining information while driving is available as an option.  forward visibility is inhibited by thick a-pillars in front, while the view over the right shoulder is reduced by wide c-pillars.  a nice in-dash six-disc cd changer is available that features big buttons and knobs to control audio functions. All stereo systems should be ergonomically designed this well.  . driving impressionsaturn likes to say the ion is fun to drive, but enthusiast drivers will find it ordinary. That's not to say it's bad, just that it does not excite.  the engine pulls nicely with more performance than most other cars of this size. The engine sounds a little rough at times, which is surprising considering it is a much newer design than the old engine and it has counter-balance shafts for added smoothness.  we weren't entirely happy with the steering. There's a dead spot on center. Off center it's a bit darty and it feels numb when driving fast on winding roads. Also, there's a fair amount of torque steer, a tugging sensation on the steering wheel when accelerating hard out of a turn. The variable-ratio steering is electrically operated, which is one of the first times such a system has been used in a small car. It makes the steering more effective at slow speed and also improves fuel economy as power is not sapped from the engine by a hydraulic pump. We liked the ion sedan's small turning radius, two to three feet tighter than that of a dodge neon or pontiac sunfire, useful when making u-turns.  a sophisticated integrated electrical system with a lan (local area network) is part of the technology in the ion that is hidden from view. Apart from daytime running lights, automatic headlights and electric steering it does not offer much in the base model but it does allow the easy addition of options such as a sophisticated anti-lock braking system with traction control. Consequently these options can be offered on all models in the ion range as the basic circuits are built in. On up market models it allows for power windows and mirrors with extra features that might normally be found on more expensive cars.  ride and handling are good, average for the class. The ion seems to be free of squeaks and rattles. Refinement, in terms of noise and vibration, is, at best, average for the class. The front suspension has struts while the rear uses a torsion-beam to provide more interior space in the trunk. Front and rear stabilizer bars on all models reduce lean in the corners.  . summarysaturn appears to have tried hard to make a stylish car that's also somewhat fun to drive. It has several innovative features including electric steering, a ce. Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Power Mirrors✔ Power Locks✔ AM/FM✔ Air Conditioning✔ CD Changer✔ Cruise Control✔ Alloy Wheels
