2008 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, smoother and a little larger. introductionthe jeep liberty is all-new for 2008. It's slightly bigger and has a smoother ride, but it maintains the ruggedness of the previous version. The 2008 liberty is quite capable off road, one of the best in its class.  the 2008 jeep liberty is 2. 5 inches longer overall and its wheelbase is two inches longer than that of its predecessor. With heavily revised styling, the 2008 liberty is taller and more angular than the 2001-2007 models, reminiscent of the much-loved, rugged but crude 1990s jeep cherokee. Compared to recent jeep offerings such as the patriot and compass, the all-new 2008 liberty is more of a true jeep, with off-road prowess and bold, upright styling.  the only engine for 2008 is a carryover 3. 7-liter v6 that makes 210 horsepower. When it comes to fuel economy, the liberty's weight and powertrain provide numbers that are on the lower end of the class.  jeep has made an effort to refine the liberty and add premium options. Snow belt drivers will appreciate the new full-time all-wheel drive system available in addition to the carryover part-time system. Within its class, only the nissan xterra can claim as much off-road capability.  when they redesigned it, jeep engineers set out to give the 2008 liberty pleasant road manners and, when it comes to ride quality, they succeeded. The liberty rides firmly, but irons out most bumps quite well and is stable on the highway. The liberty sacrifices handling for off-road prowess, however. The liberty leans in turns and has a floppy feeling in quick changes of direction. It's this aspect that makes the liberty most comparable to the nissan xterra and ford escape. These three are more rugged, more capable off road than the honda cr-v, toyota rav4, and the new nissan rogue, which are lighter, more agile, and more carlike. If we were heading up a rough logging road, we'd be pleased to be in a liberty.  inside, the liberty has plenty of room for five. We view it as a step back in terms of materials quality and fit and finish, however. The previous liberty had more soft touch surfaces and closer panel gaps, while the current model has more hard-plastic surfaces. Still, it's not an unpleasant cockpit.  cargo room is a plus. The liberty's second row seats fold flat, as does the front passenger seat, to provide plenty of room for hauling boxes, bikes and life's other accessories.  with a maximum towing capacity of 5000 pounds, rugged off-road capability and plenty of cargo space, the 2008 jeep liberty is a good choice for small families or couples that tow boats or go camping. The models are sport 20,330), sport 4wd 21,940), limited 24,515), and limited 4wd 26,125). The lone engine is a 210-horsepower 3. 7-liter v6. The limited's premium sound group 395) adds jeep's uconnect wireless cell phone link to the sport's version.  safety features include the mandated dual front airbags, plus head-protecting side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors and front side airbags for torso protection. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, hill start assist, traction control, and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. The antilock brakes have rough road detection; when rough conditions are detected, the system holds the brake pulses longer to better slow the vehicle. Hill descent control is standard on 4x4 models. Optional safety features include trailer sway control and rear obstacle detection. walkaroundwhen jeep introduced the liberty in 2001, it was the middle child of a three vehicle lineup. Now that it's redesigned for 2008, it's the middle child of a seven-vehicle lineup. Compared to recent jeep offerings such as the patriot and compass, however, it is more of a true jeep, with off-road prowess and bold, upright styling.  the 2008 liberty is unmistakable as a jeep. The 2008 model is 2. 5 inches longer and 0. 8 inch wider than the previous generation (2001-07), with a wheelbase that grows by 1. 8 inches. Its tall, upright, angular styling fits with the current jeep design idiom while also recalling the 1990s cherokee. It is the same platform used for the last model and it is shared with the dodge nitro. The big news here is the new rear suspension. It's an independent five-link unit that allows for greater interior room and better ride characteristics.  the most noticeable aspect of the front end is jeep's characteristic seven-slot grille, which is taller on this model. The grille is body color on sport, chrome on limited. The front fascia is body color on all, and the front air dam is removable to provide more ground clearance for off-roading.  from the side, the liberty looks like a junior commander, with tall windows in a squared off greenhouse. The limited's chrome theme extends to the side with chrome side trim and roof rails. These components are black on sport, and the roof rails are optional. Jeep has moved it under the floor for 2008. The tailgate also changes from a swing gate to a liftgate design, and separate opening rear glass is newly standard.  jeep says its competition is the honda crv, ford escape, toyota rav4 and nissan xterra. The 2008 liberty is approximately the same size as these vehicles, but is considerably heavier than all but the xterra. It is also more capable off-road than all but the xterra. interiorthough not luxurious, the new interior of the 2008 liberty is functional. Most drivers will like the high seating position. Head room in the front seat is plentiful, but the tallest drivers will want more available front leg room. The side mirrors are large and the cabin has a lot of glass, making for fine rear visibility.  the gauges are easy to spot and the controls are simple to use. The climate functions are controlled by three simple knobs and the radio and other vehicle controls are straightforward. There is a useful cubby on the center of the dash top, and sizable grab handle is located just above the smallish glove box. The center console is deep and has a removable tray on top. There is also a small tray next to the shift handle. In 4wd models, a small electronic switch replaces last year's transfer case lever.  we don't think the interior feels like an upgrade from the previous generation, however. The previous liberty had some nice materials and quality finishes that are lacking in this new version. The dash, for instance, is all plastic with no sof.

2002 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Nothing could be farther from the truth. There's no mistaking it for something else. The current model is three inches longer than pre-1999 versions but rides on the same wheelbase. It's a pleasing look.  the front seats are comfortable, with thickly padded longitudinal ribs, but they seem a bit cushy for serious off-road driving. Climbing into the back seats is much easier than before, however, because the rear doors are wider.  more space is available for cargo because the spare tire was moved from its upright position on the left rear side of the cargo compartment to lie down under the load floor. That feature relieves the long reach to the dashboard for the radio controls. The long reach is a function of the high seating position. It produces a noticeable 25-horsepower increase over the standard 4. 7-liter v8. The more powerful engine also uses more of the pricier fuel, sucking down a gallon for every 13 miles on the epa's city test cycle. That's one mpg worse than the standard 4. 7-liter v8, and the jeep's fuel tank keeps its 20. 5-gallon capacity, so overall range is reduced.  the high-output 4. 7-liter v8 accelerates the grand cherokee smoothly, and it sounds refined. It produces 260 horsepower at 5100 rpm and 330 pounds-feet of torque at 3600, compared with the standard 4. 7-liter v8's 235 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 295 pounds-feet of torque at 3200 rpm. In other words, it produces more power, but revs higher to do that.  the five-speed automatic transmission that comes standard with the v8 engines shifts unobtrusively. Hurrying up a mountain or around weekend-warrior crazies is a breeze with the higher second gear. With two overdrive gears, cruising on the highway at 70 mph means the engine is turning over at just 2000 rpm in fifth. Experienced off-road drivers prefer a longer pedal travel for precise manipulation of the throttle in tricky situations. Deliberate mashing of the throttle pedal brings a quick launch, quicker than most other suvs in this class. That's due in part to the relative light weight of the jeep, whose figure is kept trim by its unitbody construction; many truck-based suvs are built on a separate frame. This unusual design strategy, also used by the smaller nissan pathfinder and mitsubishi's montero, results in a platform that is lighter and more rigid than it would be using more traditional designs. This relative light weight helps the jeep feel faster and more responsive than most v8 suvs, especially the huge tahoes and expeditions.  a surprisingly tight turning circle adds to the jeep's spirited, nimble feel when maneuvering in close-quarters. But the reality is that it's a big, heavy truck. In most street driving conditions, the grand cherokee drives like a truck, with a tall, body-rolling ride. Off-road, or driving down a bumpy, rutted rural lane, it feels controlled and steady. There's no need to slow down for rough railroad crossings in the grand cherokee.  steering is quick but isolated, despite sophisticated tuning of the front engine cradle and front suspension and steering component mounts. But that's the same for all of the top-selling sport-utilities. The overland's standard off-road suspension lifts the body an inch higher than the standard suspension.  underneath, the grand cherokee still sits atop live axles. The trend among competing sport-utilities is to use independent suspensions for better highway performance. Jeep's new liberty has an independent front suspension and the 2002 ford explorer uses an independent rear suspension. But the big jeep's live axles are only a drawback on washboard-rutted roads, where the wagon will bounce. summaryjeep grand cherokee is a popular choice for families on the go who like its rugged image. We think, however, that it's creeping too close to the $40,000 mark in overland guise.  it tracks like daniel boone through the backcountry, and jeep claims that a higher than average percentage of its customers use their vehicles for that purpose. Indeed, only land rovers and toyotas can compete with jeep when it comes to trail running. When the going gets rough, the jeep grand cherokee is a thoughtful design that delivers. model lineuplaredo 25,500); laredo 4wd 27,470); sport 25,425); limited 30,345); limited 4wd 32,775); overland 4wd 36,905). assembled indetroit, michigan; graz, austria. options as testedadjustable pedals 185); class iv trailer hitch, wiring and power steering cooler 255); tire pressure monitor 150); chrome wheels 870). model testedoverland 36,905). 2005 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Day in and day out, it takes the place of a car or wagon. Fold the rear seats and it can move two people and some serious cargo. In this respect, it stands apart from the herd of compact sport-utility vehicles, few of which offer true off-road capability. The liberty gives up some refinement and road agility to do this. On the road, it does not ride or handle as well as some of the other small suvs. But the liberty is among the best of the small sport-utilities for drivers who need serious off-road capability on the weekend yet need practicality and affordability during the week.  for 2005, the liberty gets a new engine and two new transmissions. With the addition of an advanced, 2. 7-liter common-rail diesel engine, jeep becomes the first midsize suv available with a diesel engine in the u. The diesel is backed by a five-speed overdrive automatic transmission. A new, six-speed manual transmission replaces the previous five-speed manual.  the liberty renegade has seen the most change for 2005, having been fitted with a flatter hood, taller grille, off-road foglamps and taillamp guards. All receive a new front fascia, grille, foglamps fender flares, and body side-moldings. Interior refinements include relocated power window switches, new instrument panel cluster graphics, and improved seat comfort. lineupthe 2005 jeep liberty is available in three trim levels: sport, limited edition, and renegade. The new diesel engine is available on both sport and limited models. A five-speed automatic is standard on the diesel.  sport 19,190) and sport 4wd 20,700) are entry-level models, but receive visual changes for 2005 that add the look of custom details. Air conditioning 850) is optional, however. Power windows and other features can be added as options. The optional v6 is available with manual transmission 850) or an automatic 1,675). The common rail diesel, or crd, is available for the sport 4x4 24,515).  limited edition models offer upgraded interior amenties and a better grade of cloth upholstery. Limited 23,525) and limited 4wd 25,035) come standard with the v6 engine and automatic transmission. Air conditioning is standard. Other options include the trailer tow group 285), a trac-loc locking rear differential 285), power sunroof 700) and sirius satellite digital radio 195). While the tire pressure monitor and simple warning signal are standard, a roof-mounted tire pressure display, which shows the actual pressure at each wheel, is optional 75).  renegade 2wd 22,910) and 4wd 24,520) models come standard with the 3. 7-liter v6, six-speed manual transmission and command-trac part-time 4wd system. Renegade comes standard with air conditioning; cruise control; tilt steering; 16-inch graphite-painted aluminum wheels; power windows, mirrors, and locks; illuminated keyless entry; side rails; and many other features. Renegade 4wd models include rugged tubular side rails and rock rails. Automatic transmission 825) is optional. A premium package 1,240) adds the automatic, power leather seats, and upgraded door trim panels, along with an overhead vehicle information center that allows the customer to program automatic locking, lighting, and other features.  side-impact airbags 490) are optional on all liberty models, and we highly recommend them. Serious 4wd adventurers may want the optional off-road group 765 for sport, $520 for limited), which includes skid plates for the front suspension, fuel tank and transfer case; a locking rear differential; heavy-duty engine cooling; p235/70r16 all-terrain tires; and tow hooks. walkaroundwith its seven-slat grille and round headlights, there's no question the liberty looks like a jeep.  the liberty's body is tall, providing the driver with a commanding view of the terrain ahead. In terms of exterior dimensions, the liberty fits between the jeep wrangler and grand cherokee. With an overall length of 174. 4 inches, the jeep liberty is slightly longer than the ford escape. It's longer than the wrangler, but significantly shorter and lighter than the grand cherokee.  2005 liberty sport models get a new body-color grille, provisions for optional fog lamps, and higher turn lamp locations for more protection from road debris. A flatter hood complements the traditional round jeep headlimps for a distinctive jeep appearance. A new body-color grille is part of the re-styling for 2005, as are large freestanding fog lamps with black bezels, and a new sill to protect the body sides from road blast. Tow hooks and a bright silver metallic applique across the new molded-in color front fascia are standard features. Bolted flares are also molded-in color for more durability and have chrome-plated attachment details. A new luggage side rack with beefieer molded-in color end pieces, and a brushed silver metallic tubular side rail combine to suggest a rugged appearance. The black off-road light bar, standard in prior years, is now an optional feature. Fender flares, combined with the off-road light bar and taillamp guards give the renegade a look that stands apart from the sport and limited models.  a neat feature on all models: yanking hard on the outside door handle causes the glass hatch to swing up as the door itself is swinging out, which saves time and effort. Pulling on the handle with less force causes just the glass hatch to swing up. Also, the door swings open from the right, better for curbside pickups at the airport.  the jeep liberty debuted as a 2002 model. 2003 brought enhancements aimed at improving on-road stability. 2004 brought upgrades in safety equipment, and in comfort and convenience options. Among them: chrysler's enhanced accident response system, which unlocks doors and turns on interior lights five seconds after an airbag deploys. interiorthe jeep liberty comes with a roomy interior that can accommodate five passengers and a generous amount of cargo, with 29 cubic feet of usable space behind the second row of seats. Sitting in the liberty gives the driver a sense of spaciousness with 40. 7 inches of headroom, best in class, according to jeep. Door panels are scalloped out for elbow rests, and a grab handle is provided on the passenger's side of the dash. Sport seats we tried in '04 felt firm in the middle, but the side bolsters were too mushy to provide much side support. For '05, they have been noticeably improved through the use of dual-density foam. Also, there's no seat-height adjustment. The side bolsters are still soft, a signal that the liberty is set up more to absorb vibration than sling around corners. The cloth upholstery, with a diamond-plate inspired fabric, feels like it'll hold up well. The renegade front seats are tailored with unique cloth center panels and vinyl bolsters. The front seats in the limited are more comfortable. The grab handle, located on the a-pillar above the steering wheel, is not in the perfect position to help shorter people swing inside.  the liberty's rear seats are comfortable, capable of holding three people. Two adults should be happy here. Cloth Interior✔ AM/FM✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Player✔ Leather Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ Aluminum Wheels

2004 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Introduced more than a decade ago and redesigned five years ago, it lacks the refinement found in the latest wave of suvs. People were fawning over it. Granted, it was an inferno red overland model. Granted, the 2004 models feature a new front fascia that updates and freshens the looks. The point is, people still love the grand cherokee even though it's been a familiar site for some time now.  and they continue to buy them. Grand cherokee ranks among the best-selling suvs in america. Jeep sells about 220,000 grand cherokees a year. That's a whole big bunch. Grand cherokee sales outrank such popular nameplates as tahoe, suburban, yukon, expedition, and durango. And the imports don't even come close. In one month, september 2003, jeep sold 16,410 grand cherokees, which would not be a bad half-year for the mercedes m-class or bmw x5. This drives other manufacturers crazy. The marketing people for every suv sold in america list grand cherokee as a competitor simply because jeep sells so many of them.  why is grand cherokee so successful? For starters, everyone knows what it is. The jeep grand cherokee combines luxury with impressive off-road capability. It served as a symbol of success throughout the 1990s. It can tackle steep slopes, slog through mud, and plow through snow. It's reasonably quick with the available high-output 4. 7-liter v8. It was completely redesigned for 1999. It has been continuously revised since for improved ride quality, easier steering effort, improved brake pedal feel, and increased safety and convenience.  grand cherokee is luxuriously appointed yet competitively priced. Its interior is attractive and tastefully trimmed in handsome wood. Its list of features looks impressive. Msrps range from $26,980 for a six-cylinder 2wd laredo to $38,995 for a 4wd overland with a v8. Hordes of new suvs offer a smoother ride, better handling and more refinement. Grand cherokee has a relatively rough ride. Its new navigation screen is relatively small (though the system itself is modern and the screen works great for displaying radio stations). Its radio buttons are small, fussy and hard to operate. And in many other ways it does not feel like a contemporary product. Until then, the current model strives to deliver the american dream. lineupjeep has expanded the grand cherokee line to five for 2004: laredo 27,260), limited 32,190), and overland 37,015) continue. A new special edition model has been added along with a new freedom edition. This inline-6 with overhead valves is rated at 195 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. A 4. 7-liter overhead-valve v8 is available that develops 235 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and comes with a five-speed automatic transmission.  a high-output version of the 4. 7-liter v8, with 265 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, is standard on overland and optional on limited, special edition, and freedom edition models. The v8 comes with the five-speed automatic transmission plus goodyear wrangler eagle es p235/65r17 tires.  laredo, the base model, comes with a high level of standard equipment, including a six-speaker infinity sound system with cd player, cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver seat, tilt steering, cruise control, and power windows, mirrors and locks.  the new two special edition models are essentially packages added to the laredo. The special edition features the monochromatic exterior design cues of the limited model, plus fog lamps and an am/fm/ cassette/10-disc cd audio system with infinity speakers. Special edition 4wd models are upgraded with the quadra trac ii transfer case. The freedom edition adds high-back cloth seats with jeep logo embroidery on driver and passenger seat backs and chrome tow hooks.  more luxurious is the limited model, which adds leather upholstery, automatic dual-zone climate control, fog lights, universal garage door opener, low-back bucket seats, and other features. A 10-way power adjustable driver's seat, a memory function for the driver's seat and mirrors, and other features are available in option packages.  overland adds satin-silver aluminum wheels and metallic-painted side rock rails. Overland comes with a 10-disc cd changer and express-open power sunroof. Ceiling-mounted side-curtain air bags are standard. walkaroundthe 2004 jeep grand cherokee gets a fresh look with a new front fascia, new grille and new fog lamp appearance for all models.  grand cherokee is readily identifiable in a market crowded with on-road suvs. From its jailhouse grille to its squared-off wheel openings, there's no mistaking the grand cherokee for anything but a jeep. Short front and rear overhangs contribute to its off-road capability, and to its pulled-taught styling. Slightly rounded edges and a subtle bulge in the roofline modernize, but do not detract from, a design heritage traceable to the 1941 original. interiorthe interior of the grand cherokee is attractive and comfortable. The overland's redwood burl wood trim is attractive and tastefully applied (and it is wood, not plastic).  the front seats are comfortable, though they seem cushy for serious off-road driving. Tall drivers with long legs will find themselves moving the pedals all the way forward (away from them). The pedals automatically reposition themselves with the seats and mirrors when the available memory function is activated, a boon to couples who are significantly taller or shorter than their significant other. That feature relieves the long reach to the dashboard for the radio controls, a reach made longer by the grand cherokee's high seating position.  the gauges on limited and overland models are electroluminescent, so the dials themselves appear to glow at night. It's a more pleasing look than the conventional setup, where the pointers and numerals are lighted against a darker background.  the new navigation system 1,200) nicely integrates the global positioning satellite data with the radio controls. The 4. 9-inch full-color display on the center console is relatively small by contemporary standards, but it's a crisp readout that displays a map of the surrounding area. On the other hand, this system costs less than most navigation systems. The screen does an outstanding job of displaying radio stations in big, crisp numerals.  the stereo system buttons themselves are too small and too hard to operate while driving. Annoyingly, there's a separate set button for station presets, more awkward than the more common method of holding down a preset button for a few seconds. This same awkward button is used for navigation functions. The available cd changer is mounted in the right rear of the cargo compartment in a form-fitting compartment, not as handy as an in-dash changer.  big knobs make adjusting cabin temperature quick and easy.  rear legroom is tight for long-distance trips with large fishing buddies, but adequate for a night on the town with another couple. Climbing into the back seats is relatively easy thanks to wide doors.  the rear seats fold flat (after removing the headrests) to reveal a decent-sized cargo compartment with a flat floor. Tie downs are provided on the sides and floor, handy for securing cargo. The rear tire lies under the floor, which allows mor.
