Sporty new coupes join subcompact line of sedans. introductionhyundai vehicles have been dramatically improved over the past few years. The hyundai accent sedan was redesigned for 2006, and this past spring an attractive coupe joined the lineup, adding style, sophistication, and content than ever before.  while the sedan brings some suave to the entry-level family segment, the coupe is clearly seeking street cred, offering hip accessories ranging from a strut-tower brace to faux carbon-fiber trim. Think of it as inexpensive canvas for the fast & furious.  this latest generation of accents is built on a more substantial platform. They are slightly larger and are notably better cars than the previous generation. Hyundai is clearly moving up-market, and the accent is a viable alternative to the recently introduced toyota yaris, honda fit, and nissan versa subcompacts.  power comes from a clean and sophisticated 1. 6-liter double overhead-cam engine, featuring variable valve timing and delivering more power than the chevrolet aveo or scion xa. The environmentally friendly accent is an ultra low emission vehicle, or ulev, and rates 37 mpg on the epa highway scale.  what's more, accent delivers a generous list of safety features. Six airbags (front, seat-mounted side-impact, and side-curtain) are standard on all models; antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution are optional on the sedan and standard on the sporty se coupe. The se also comes with all premium package features, plus fog lights, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, metallic interior accents, express-down for the driver's-side window, seat-back pockets, front door bottle holders, illuminated vanity mirrors, and windshield shade band. It starts at the front with integrated 5-mph bumpers and large aerodynamic headlight enclosures that wrap around the front fenders. It has a high roofline defined on either side by black rubber rain gutters, while the windshield blends into the front of the roof without any visible trim. A bold character line originates just behind the front wheel opening and slashes boldly across the doors, fading again just short of the taillights.  the back of the sedan roof sweeps toward the trailing edge of the trunk lid, giving it almost a coupe-like appearance. Unlike many modern cars, accent has a generous greenhouse with big windows; blacked-out trim both defines and unifies the side-window opening. This, coupled with a long wheelbase with relatively short overhangs, makes the sedan appear a tad bigger than it actually is.  overall, the accent has a pretty, if somewhat ordinary look to it that should not offend anyone. As part of hyundai's plan, the accent sedan is more buttoned-down conservative than the bolder kia rio, with which it shares its basic construction. We see a hint of volvo in its nose and maybe a dash of honda in its rear three-quarter view.  the accent coupe has a look all its own, though it shares its front fenders and defining character line with the sedan. The differences begin with the bolder two-slot air opening that replaces the sedan's fine-lined horizontal grille and ends with a rounded tail that takes the tentative reverse curve at the base of the sedan's roof, boldly widens it, and fuses it with the horizontally curving quarter panel. The two-door accent is unashamedly a hatchback, and makes no pretense to a separate trunk lid.  not surprisingly, then, the coupe is as tall and wide as the sedan, and shares the sedan's 98. 4-inch wheelbase, but at 159. 3 inches overall it has shed a significant 9. 2 inches of rear overhang. The result is one of the cutest little rears we've seen anywhere lately, and a short, sassy profile that looks like it should cost more than it does.  on both coupe and sedan, a roof-mounted micro-antenna is aerodynamic, flexible, and said to improve signal strength. interiorperhaps more than anything it's the interior of the hyundai accent that has been improved over the pre-2006 models. For starters, there's a much better view out. The hip point in the driver's seat is two inches higher than in older accents, giving the driver a better view of the road. The accent cabin has a conservative two-tone interior color scheme reminiscent of larger cars, and it's trimmed out quite nicely, helping it avoid the feeling of an econobox.  the dashboard wraps around to the door panels and the center stack is nicely integrated, with large, well positioned climate control knobs. Among them: dampened grab handles, a thick roof lining, center folding front and rear armrests, a tilt steering wheel, a micro roof-mounted antenna, driver and passenger side-illuminated vanity mirrors, cabin air filtration, remote trunk and fuel cap releases, and a windshield shade band. There are decent size pockets with a cup holder in each door. In addition there are other storage places and a big glovebox.  the rear seat splits 60/40 for additional storage capacity. For better rearward visibility, the three rear-seat headrests slide down shingle-style into the seatback when not needed. A fold out center armrest with two cupholders is provided for rear-seat passengers.  rear-seat leg room and headroom is not too bad unless the car is full of six-footers. Getting into the back seats is made easier by locating the rear wheels farther back, so the wheelwell does not intrude into the sedan's door opening as much.  compared to the sedan, the coupe surrenders less than a half inch of hip room up front, and less than an inch in the rear; otherwise its passenger-comfort dimensions are identical to those of the sedan. Both models qualify as compact cars by government interior-volume standards, while the competing toyota yaris and scion xa are classified as subcompacts.  trunk volume in the sedan is a very respectable 12. 4 cubic feet. Despite its shorter length, the hatchback coupe expands this to 15. 9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place. We have not had a chance to check out an a.

All-new three-door coupe is a home run. introductionthe hyundai veloster is an all new car, a unique three-door coupe, and out of the box it's a contender as a sporty economy car. Its new 1. 6-liter engine is super smooth, makes 138 horsepower, and has all the right high-tech stuff, such as gasoline direct injection (gdi), and dual continuously variable valve timing (d-cvvt). With the manual transmission, it gets 28 city/40 highway/32 combined miles per gallon, as much as the honda cr-z hybrid (31/37). In a hard couple hundred miles, including two-lanes, freeway and city, we averaged about 29 mpg, with both the manual and dual-clutch automated manual transmission.  much of the hyundai veloster was designed and developed in the u. S., most notably the rear suspension that gives veloster an excellent all-around ride and makes it totally obedient. There are other good things to make the driving enjoyable. Steering is solid, secure, and gives great feedback; cornering is stable, the 6-speed manual gearbox is sweet; and the brakes are just right for a sporty car.  there's an available new 6-speed paddle-shifting dct, or dual clutch transmission, but we liked the manual transmission more. The dct shifts aren't as sharp as volkswagen's similar dsg; the veloster's dct feels more like an automatic transmission than a clutchless manual, and the paddles are poor.  the veloster's styling gets a lot of looks on the highway, although we think hyundai stylists went overboard with the scallops. The nose looks low, and from a three-quarter rear view, it looks tough on its haunches.  as a three-door coupe, it totally pulls off the two-door roofline. The third door is on the passenger side, hinged at the front like a real door; it's not the first three-door, but other cars have been awkwardly hinged at the rear. It's easy to climb in and out of the back seat, although there's only 31. 7 inches of legroom back there. Total interior volume is best in the sporty compact class, beating the scion tc and blowing the mini cooper out of the water.  the upholstery that comes with the style package is terrific. Interior details include nice console support at the right thigh, good feel with the three-spoke leather steering wheel, pleasing uncluttered gauges, and digital information that's easily accessed. There's a blind spot at the c-pillar over the driver's shoulder, and the horizontal structural support in the fastback glass liftgate restricts visibility, although prius is worse and honda cr-z worst. Veloster gets looks on the highway, and that's what matters to many. But veloster has lost the clean direction of the smaller hyundai accent.  we like saying 'veloster,' by the way. It's not a real word but should have been. Hey bro, that wave was veloster.  hyundai stylists went a bit far with the scallops. Veloster's muscular shape is marred by lumps and scoops, and its face leaves much to be desired. The scooped hood with pretend vents has the look of an australian v8 supercar, but then there are bulging headlights that look all too silvery, over another gratuitous scoop like a tear.  a chrome bar under a small black grille, with the hyundai emblem, is unfortunately uninspiring. Veloster's mouth is as big as an audi's, but it's filled in with body-colored plastic, shaped to resemble wings, but maybe looks more like superman's shoulders while flying, with a chrome cape and silver h for a face.  the scoops keep coming, and begin to look like gouges. There are more on the mirrors, doorsills and liftgate. The nose looks low, and from a three-quarter rear view, it looks tough on its haunches.  as a three-door coupe, it totally pulls off the two-door roofline. Unlike others, with a third door hinged at the rear, this is a real door. Hyundai pioneers the obvious without compromising the ceiling.  on the passenger side of veloster, the door is hidden save the seam. Rakish upsweep meets a racy roofline, invisible door handle in the window corner. It's boxed in by a big black fascia, that slims the bumper and looks good in pictures, but a bit less good on the street. The cool tailpipes get smothered by the volume of black plastic; but worse, the license plate sits like a big square hat on the pipes. In publicity photos, hyundai photoshops out the license plate, don't blame them.  the black fascia also creates pounce-like stance for veloster, by turning the rear fenders into muscular legs. With its hunched back, veloster looks almost frog-like. They say the a-pillars are like a helmet visor, the center stack resembles a fuel tank, the console mirrors a motorcycle seat, and air vents are inspired by tailpipes. We drove velosters for a day, and can't say we noticed. Mostly we noticed overkill on the trapezoidal trim pieces.  we also noticed the terrific fit and materials of the style package seats, nice console support at the right thigh, good feel of the three-spoke leather steering wheel, pleasing uncluttered gauges, and digital information accessed easily. Features include bluetooth, pandora internet radio via iphone, and gracenote music connectivity. A 196-watt six-speaker audio system is standard, while the 450-watt eight-speaker system comes with the style package.  rear visibility has a couple of problems. There's a big blind spot at the c-pillar over the driver's shoulder, comes with the roofline territory. And there's that structural support in the fastback glass liftgate, blocking rearview visibility, also comes with the territory. But the prius is worse and the honda cr-z is worst.  as for the third door, others, for example the mazda rx-8, have been hinged at the rear, so the front door must opened too. Main thing is that yoga isn't needed to climb in and out of the rear seat, where there's a paltry 31. 7 inches of legroom, but after all it's a compact car. Total interior volume is best in the sport compact class, beating the scion tc and blowing the mini cooper out of the water. It even beats the mini clubman, by 105. 3 to 89. 2 cubic feet. driving impressionthe heart of the matter is the rear suspension, making veloster totally obedient, and there are other good things to make the driving enjoyable. Steering is solid, secure, and gives great feedback. The new 1. 6-liter direct-injection engine is super smooth, and the 6-speed gearbox is sweet. Brakes are just-right sensitive, for such a sporty car.  the unusual rear suspension, v-beam torsion axle with an integrated 23mm stabilizer bar, was designed and developed mostly by one detroit-bred engineer in california over six months; hundreds of spring, shock and tire combinations were tried on the test track and highway, to get the ride and handling just right. It stays flat, and that's quite a compliment for a car like this. The cornering is as stable as the steering is solid. It's also very light, at 2583 pounds, and that helps a lot.  the new 1. 6-liter engine makes 138 horsepower. The math yields a specific output of 86. 3 horsepower per liter, tops in the field. A good value among compacts gets better. introductionthe hyundai accent was all new for 2012, roomier, more powerful, and modern in style than its predecessor. A subcompact, accent competes against the toyota yaris, honda fit, ford fiesta, chevrolet sonic, mazda 2 and nissan versa. According to the government, however, the accent's interior volume puts it in the larger compact class.  accent is longer in wheelbase and overall length than most of the competition, which means more room inside for people and cargo, and a smoother ride.  we found the accent very easy to drive. It's responsive but not quick, smooth by subcompact standards but not luxurious. Everything in the cabin is intuitive and easy to operate. It's an attractive design and the materials look nice.  with flowing lines and highly sculpted sheetmetal the accent looks like a smaller version of the elantra. That's not a coincidence. Accent shares hyundai's fluidic sculpture design theme with the high-priced sonata and elantra models.  accent's body shape carries a low coefficient of drag, 0. 30, which helps with wind noise and fuel mileage. The engine is rated at 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. All new, like the rest of the car, for 2012, the engine is 40 pounds lighter than the one it replaced. Like the other cars in this class, the accent uses front-wheel drive.  the accent comes with a choice of 6-speed manual gearbox or 6-speed automatic. On manual-transmission models, there is an ecoshift indicator between the instrument pods to indicate the proper gear for all driving conditions. We liked the with the 6-speed manual but didn't care for the indicator as we think we know the proper gear better than the car does. The clutch pedal was light and easy to operate. The automatic features a shiftronic manual-shifting mode, allowing the driver more control over shifting. We preferred to just put it in drive and go.  fuel economy is slightly better with the 6-speed manual gearbox, which gets an epa-estimated 32 mpg combined city and highway rating, compared with 31 mpg combined for the 6-speed automatic. Fuel economy is an epa-rated 28/37 mpg city/highway regardless of transmission choice. Compared to 2011 and older models, however, this new-generation accent looks like the product of a different car company. No longer a jelly-bean-shaped rental transport unit, the hyundai accent has grown up to be a real, modern car.  it took a complete cosmetic makeover, with every panel on the 2011 model replaced by newer and flashier sheetmetal. And there's almost no chrome on the exterior other than the badges.  we like the sedan, especially when compared to the nerdy outgoing car, but we like the hatchback a whole lot better when it comes to pure eye appeal. Hyundai claims a respectable 0. 30 coefficient of drag for the sedan version, slightly higher for the five-door with the longer roof. interiorthe hyundai accent interior was totally redesigned for 2012. One additional change for 2013 is an upgrade to cloth-insert inside door trim for all models.  the latest accent has a far more modern interior than the previous model, with brushed metal accents on the doors, steering wheel and center console, white-on-black instrumentation with red needles, and a multi-function steering wheel. The elements have been redesigned for more room, more storage spaces.  sporty bucket seats feature superior cushions and bolsters. We found the seats comfortably supportive without being intrusive. Outward vision is excellent. The instrument panel, center stack, vents, switches and controls are all easy to look at and operate. The instrument package contains the usual two round gauges with digital readouts and indicators between the deeply tunneled clusters and is bathed in ice blue light at night.  the three-spoke steering wheel has a thick rim and a thickly padded hub. Lower models have urethane-covered steering wheels, upper models have convenient switches for the sound system on the left, cruise control system on the right, and telephone on the lower left. Flagship se models wrap the wheel in leather.  as for storage, the rated cargo capacity of the hatchback models is 21. 2 cubic feet behind the folding second-row bench seat, and 47. 5 cubic feet with the second seat folded flat. Accent sedans provide a still-generous 13. 7 cubic feet, which can also be expanded by folding the rear seatbacks.  door and console storage is generous, and upper-level models have a sliding console armrest, unusual in this class.  in the center binnacle, there is a usb port, an aux port, and the two combine to make a port for an ipod cable, a very clever arrangement. The engine is smooth and quiet, and runs at about 2200 rpm at 70 mph in sixth gear, and about 4400 rpm at 100 mph. The thrifty, gutty little gamma engine is surrounded by helpers like electric power steering, low-rolling-resistance tires, lighter elements throughout the engine bay and the rest of the vehicle.  it all adds up to accent's 28/37 mpg epa mileage rating city/highway.  the 6-speed automatic transmission performed quickly and quietly. It features an active eco mode that modifies engine management and transmission shift points for up to 7 percent better fuel economy, presumably at the expense of throttle response.  the 6-speed manual gearbox is easy to shift and the clutch pedal was light and easy to operate. Some models include an ecoshift indicator between the instrument pods to indicate the proper gear for all driving conditions. We did not care for this and generally find shift lights distracting.  going down the road, the accent is far smoother and quieter than we were expecting it to be. A rigid chassis, high-strength steel, generous sound insulation and effective door seals show in the car's quiet highway behavior.  we found the accent responds relatively quickly, has good tracking, relatively quick response, and good feel on center. Bump, rut and pothole damping is very good. Roll control on twisty mountain and desert roads was very good, and the car stayed put pretty well in hard corners. The hyundai accent sedan was redesigned for 2006, and this past spring an attractive coupe joined the lineup, adding style, sophistication, and content than ever before.  while the sedan brings some suave to the entry-level family segment, the coupe is clearly seeking street cred, offering hip accessories ranging from a strut-tower brace to faux carbon-fiber trim. Think of it as inexpensive canvas for the fast & furious.  this latest generation of accents is built on a more substantial platform. They are slightly larger and are notably better cars than the previous generation. Hyundai is clearly moving up-market, and the accent is a viable alternative to the recently introduced toyota yaris, honda fit, and nissan versa subcompacts.  power comes from a clean and sophisticated 1. 6-liter double overhead-cam engine, featuring variable valve timing and delivering more power than the chevrolet aveo or scion xa. The environmentally friendly accent is an ultra low emission vehicle, or ulev, and rates 37 mpg on the epa highway scale.  what's more, accent delivers a generous list of safety features. Six airbags (front, seat-mounted side-impact, and side-curtain) are standard on all models; antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution are optional on the sedan and standard on the sporty se coupe. It starts at the front with integrated 5-mph bumpers and large aerodynamic headlight enclosures that wrap around the front fenders. It has a high roofline defined on either side by black rubber rain gutters, while the windshield blends into the front of the roof without any visible trim. A bold character line originates just behind the front wheel opening and slashes boldly across the doors, fading again just short of the taillights.  the back of the sedan roof sweeps toward the trailing edge of the trunk lid, giving it almost a coupe-like appearance. Unlike many modern cars, accent has a generous greenhouse with big windows; blacked-out trim both defines and unifies the side-window opening. This, coupled with a long wheelbase with relatively short overhangs, makes the sedan appear a tad bigger than it actually is.  overall, the accent has a pretty, if somewhat ordinary look to it that should not offend anyone. As part of hyundai's plan, the accent sedan is more buttoned-down conservative than the bolder kia rio, with which it shares its basic construction. We see a hint of volvo in its nose and maybe a dash of honda in its rear three-quarter view.  the accent coupe has a look all its own, though it shares its front fenders and defining character line with the sedan. The differences begin with the bolder two-slot air opening that replaces the sedan's fine-lined horizontal grille and ends with a rounded tail that takes the tentative reverse curve at the base of the sedan's roof, boldly widens it, and fuses it with the horizontally curving quarter panel. The two-door accent is unashamedly a hatchback, and makes no pretense to a separate trunk lid.  not surprisingly, then, the coupe is as tall and wide as the sedan, and shares the sedan's 98. 4-inch wheelbase, but at 159. 3 inches overall it has shed a significant 9. 2 inches of rear overhang. The result is one of the cutest little rears we've seen anywhere lately, and a short, sassy profile that looks like it should cost more than it does.  on both coupe and sedan, a roof-mounted micro-antenna is aerodynamic, flexible, and said to improve signal strength. interiorperhaps more than anything it's the interior of the hyundai accent that has been improved over the pre-2006 models. For starters, there's a much better view out. The hip point in the driver's seat is two inches higher than in older accents, giving the driver a better view of the road. The accent cabin has a conservative two-tone interior color scheme reminiscent of larger cars, and it's trimmed out quite nicely, helping it avoid the feeling of an econobox.  the dashboard wraps around to the door panels and the center stack is nicely integrated, with large, well positioned climate control knobs. Among them: dampened grab handles, a thick roof lining, center folding front and rear armrests, a tilt steering wheel, a micro roof-mounted antenna, driver and passenger side-illuminated vanity mirrors, cabin air filtration, remote trunk and fuel cap releases, and a windshield shade band. There are decent size pockets with a cup holder in each door. In addition there are other storage places and a big glovebox.  the rear seat splits 60/40 for additional storage capacity. For better rearward visibility, the three rear-seat headrests slide down shingle-style into the seatback when not needed. A fold out center armrest with two cupholders is provided for rear-seat passengers.  rear-seat leg room and headroom is not too bad unless the car is full of six-footers. Getting into the back seats is made easier by locating the rear wheels farther back, so the wheelwell does not intrude into the sedan's door opening as much.  compared to the sedan, the coupe surrenders less than a half inch of hip room up front, and less than an inch in the rear; otherwise its passenger-comfort dimensions are identical to those of the sedan. Both models qualify as compact cars by government interior-volume standards, while the competing toyota yaris and scion xa are classified as subcompacts.  trunk volume in the sedan is a very respectable 12. 4 cubic feet. Despite its shorter length, the hatchback coupe expands this to 15. 9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place. We have not had a chance to check out an a.
