2002 audi a4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Moving toward the front of the field. introductionfor years the audi a4 has been one of the best cars in its class. Completely redesigned for 2002, it gets even better.  some 90 percent of the a4's parts are revised, and there are significant improvements across the board. The new a4 is the first luxury-brand automobile with a continuously variable automatic transmission offered as an option. The cabin, the stereo, the electronic controls and the v6 engine-everything is bigger or more powerful. Perhaps best of all, audi promises to minimize price increases when the 2002 a4 reaches showrooms in october. Expect hikes of 3 percent or less.  audi's resurgence as a luxury brand has run concurrent with the a4. This compact sedan has been audi's bestseller since its introduction in 1995. A combination of thoughtful design, build quality, invigorating performance and sane pricing have made the a4 one of the most respected cars in a class that includes some of the best cars in the world. The standard-equipment list gets even longer for 2002, adding sophisticated anti-skid electronics (called esp for electronic stability program), dual-zone climate control with charcoal filtration, concealed headlight washers and a 150-watt, 10-speaker stereo with six-cd in-dash changer. Standard safety gear includes antilock brakes, dual front airbags that deploy at different rates depending on the severity of a crash, front side-impact airbags, and curtain-style head protection airbags on each side of the cabin. Quattro is one of the most sophisticated all-wheel-drive systems going, and one of audi's most popular options. (quattro adds $1750 to the retail price.) factor in optional automatic transmissions, and there are seven variants. A new six-speed manual for the a4 3. 0 is offered only with quattro (all front-drive 3. 0 models come with an automatic).  initially, the new a4 will be offered only as a sedan. An a4 avant, or wagon, based on the new sedan will follow within six months, while a twin-turbo s4 high-performance sedan will arrive within a year. In early calendar 2002, audi will offer gm's onstar telematics system, including emergency locating and lock-out service, accident alerting, theft tracking and various concierge services. walkaroundthe 2002 a4 is shaped in the signature bauhaus style established by the larger a6 sedan. It's less angular and more curvaceous than its predecessor. Its beltline is higher, its roof and side glass longer. From the headlights to the door handles to the rear bumper, flush is the theme.  little chrome or other adornments detract from the a4's basic shape--not even an antenna. (antennae for the radio, telematics and navigation systems are embedded into the rear glass.) the a4 takes styling cues from both the tt roadster and a6, including a more prominent chrome-trimmed grille and notched-in flush taillights. The new a4 may be too much the little a6, and not distinct enough it its own right.  the body panels cover lots of changes underneath. For starters, the new a4 is larger than the old. Wheelbase increases 2. 1 inches to 104. 3, and length 2. 7 inches to 179, for dimensions roughly comparable to the bmw 3 series or mercedes-benz c-class. The a4's unitized body and frame is 45 percent stiffer than it predecessor's, according to audi, yet substantially lighter. Thicker side windows -3 millimeters thicker--account for a three-decibel reduction in interior noise, by audi's measure. They may be more stylish or aerodynamic, but from the driver's seat they offer a smaller viewing range. We would sacrifice the look for wider coverage.  this is a still a compact sedan, yet the new design makes great use of the floor space. Every interior dimension is larger, but it's most obvious in the back seat, where taller passengers will find a bit more room to stretch their legs. There's room in back for three, with three-point harness at all positions, but average-size adults will feel much more comfortable with only two. The front seats adjust to accommodate people in the six-foot, five-inch range, and the view out is nearly unobstructed in every direction.  the theme inside the a4 is cool and efficient, as it is in audi's other sedans, and not deliberately snazzy in fashion of the tt. Materials look and feel richer than those in many cars in this price range, and trim matches flawlessly. A thick, grippy, leather-covered steering wheel and shift lever are standard, with a choice of fabric or leatherette (vinyl) upholstery. The cabin beltline is edged with aluminum in the 1. 8t and real wood in the 3. 0.  switches could be larger, yet those most frequently adjusted, including stereo volume, are large enough. After a bit of familiarization, everything in the a4 is easy to find with minimal distraction, and nearly all temperature, ventilation and stereo adjustments can be completed with buttons on the steering wheel hub. Audi's red and white gauge lighting, its warning lights and leds, are among the sharpest, most readable going. Its radial sunroof switch is the best; turn it a quarter, half or full turn and the roof opens a corresponding distance. Flow-control switches on each dash vent are illuminated. Wipers make a final sweep several seconds after the washer button is released, cleaning droplets blown back up the windshield. We found nothing to gripe about during a long drive through vermont's green mountains, with the possible exception of the seats. They are comfortable and supportive in nearly all circumstances. Yet a sedan this good should have buckets with more side bolstering to keep occupants firmly in the center.  the 2002 a4's trunk is among the largest in the class (13. 4 cubic feet, compared to 10. 7 in the bmw 3 series and 12. 2 in the mercedes c-class). Moreover, the lid swings high and backs for easy access. The cold-weather package includes a nylon ski sack that allows snow skis to slide through the trunk and into the cabin without leaving a damp mess. driving impressionwe tried all of the new a4s in the gorgeous green mountains, where the twisting roads climb up and down and are seldom clogged with traffic. Yet we spent the most time in the sportiest and-as in often the case-most expensive variant: the a4 3. 0 quattro. It was a pleasant, thoroughly satisfying experience.  audi's new 3. 0-liter v6 is a big improvement (though the old one was already pretty good), and it makes the a4 one of the more powerful cars in the class. Displacement has been increased 200 cubic centimeters. The new aluminum engine block is manufactured using the latest casting technology for maximum strength and durability, and audi remains the only luxury carmaker with advanced five-valve-per-cylinder technology across its product line. The company says the new 3. 0-liter engine is more fuel-efficient and cleaner than the old 2. 8-liter engine, allowing the 3. 0 to earn california's ultra low emissions vehicle certification. Horsepower increases by 30 to 220 at 6300 rpm, while torque increases by 14 to 221 pounds-feet. The 3. 0 is smoother and stronger than the 2. 8, and very even in its power delivery. We'd guess that the 2002 a4 3. 0 will hit 60 mph from a stop in a tick under 7 seconds. That's a bit slower than the 330i, but this new audi is quick, and it's the fastest a4 yet. A4s with quattro offer a conventional five-speed automatic, while front-drive models have the new continuously variable transmission (cvt). Until now, cvts were reserved for economy cars, and unable to cope with the high torque of a v6 engine. Audi's cvt has an electric clutch (lik. 1998 audi a4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. In some ways we think it's even more of an eye-grabber than the a4 sedan, which we think is an elegant piece of work.  the avant is the latest addition to the front-drive a4 lineup and it shows, once again, that the folks in audi's design studios have been taking plenty of vitamin i, for imagination. It isn't exactly cheap at $34,230, but it's hard to imagine a better car for ripping around michigan back roads in mid-winter, making trips to the home improvement center, then impressing the valet parking crew at a black-tie dinner in the evening.  with audi's standard $500 destination charge, the basic a4 sedan starts at $24,290, the 2. 8-liter version at $28,890. The base price for the wagon, which is v6 only, is $30,965. walkaroundwagon or sedan, the epa classifies the a4 as a compact. At a tidy 176. 7 inches, the avant is actually 1. 3 inches shorter than the sedan. It's not quite an inch taller, and its sloping tailgate lends the same graceful touch as the sedan's curved rear roof pillars.  a4 sedans offer two engine choices, both featuring audi's new five-valves-per-cylinder technology. The standard engine is a turbocharged 1. 8-liter 4-cylinder, generating 150 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque.  all wagons come with the v6. And that's not a bad thing. Audi's newest v6 is a five-valve design based on the old two-valve engine. Boasting 190 horsepower, it definitely lends more urgency to forward progress. Don't be deceived into thinking all those valves and cams add up to a high-rpm screamer. The essential trait of this undersquare engine design is torque. The $1,075 optional automatic is a porsche tiptronic, which allows drivers to operate it as a semi-manual. It lends a little more variety to automatic driving than the garden variety automatic and can make commuting more entertaining. After driving avants of all flavors, we think the sport package is a bargain at $400, which adds slightly stiffer springs, more aggressive shock damping and heavier antiroll bars. The standard suspension allows just a little too much up and down motion and body roll for such an otherwise sporty little freighter and the sport suspension offered acceptable ride quality on southeastern michigan's pothole-infested highways.  the final major extra was an $1,190 power moonroof. It's not as spacious as a volvo v70, but with cooperation from those up front it is possible to get three adults into the back--three friendly adults--and the high-quality leather is a treat for the olfactory system, as well as the backside.  there were a few small demerits. Audio controls are small, the control stalks are hidden by the steering wheel spokes, the two-prong cupholders are virtually useless, and we still have trouble getting used to the lurid red glow of the a4's instruments at night.  on the other hand, the a4 adds an oil temp gauge and ammeter to the usual array of instruments, the power windows are express down all around and express up in front, and storage cubbies are padded to keep small stuff from rattling. Side airbags are included up front. We were too busy enjoying the a4's superb grip and it's lively responses. The quattro system made the most of the patchy traction available on wintry roads strewn with sand and occasional icy patches, lending a level of confidence that's rare in any vehicle, whatever the road conditions.  we were also impressed by the little wagon's balance and response in quick maneuvers. The sport package makes a readily discernible difference in controlling weight transfer, which lends a significantly higher level of precision to quick changes in direction.  the flip side of this is slightly firmer ride quality. It will outperform most sedans in this size class, and its sleek styling makes sport-utilities seem clunky, boring, and clumsy.  audi's a4 avant is definitely not cheap. But the quality is high, the furnishings posh, standard features comprehensive, and it comes loaded with character.  the station wagon is not dead. It was just waiting for someone to reinvent it. 2007 audi a4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Also new is the ultra-high performance (and at $66,000, expensive), 420-hp rs4. From the enthusiast driver's perspective, it's one of the best sedans ever.  the a4 line is complex, with 21 variants. The key is thinking according to priorities: body style, engine size, front- or all-wheel drive, transmission type. All are nicely balanced, enjoyable automobiles.  the a4 2. 0t, still priced well below $30,000, is fun to drive. It corners like a sports sedan, and high-quality construction is evident inside and out. The new convertibles are stylish, sexy and reasonably practical, and they don't have to cost an arm and a leg. The s4 models will appeal to enthusiast drivers who crave their lusty power and sporty handling, for a lot less cash than the rs4.  every a4 should appeal to techies. State-of-the-art engines feature direct fuel injection: the cleanest, most efficient means yet devised to blend gasoline and air in an engine's cylinders. Transmission choices include a six-speed automatic with tiptronic manual-shift feature and an efficient continuously variable automatic (cvt) that delivers truly seamless shifting. Sophisticated suspension technology is augmented with electronic stability control, which can help the driver avoid a crash. The 2. 0t avant 31,340) and other wagons come only with quattro, which is included in the price. The standard upholstery is cloth. Also standard: dual-zone automatic climate control with cabin filtration, cruise control, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, power driver's seat, auto-on running lights, a 10-speaker stereo with six-cd changer and 16-inch aluminum wheels.  option packages for 2. 0t: the premium package 1,900) includes a power glass sunroof and 17-inch wheels. The convenience package 1,900) adds driver's seat position memory, homelink remote transmitter, rain and light sensors, auto-dimming inside mirror with compass, auto-dimming and power folding outside mirrors and bi-xenon headlights with adaptive front lighting.  the a4 3. 2 sedan comes with the cvt automatic 35,540) and frontrak front-wheel drive; the 3. 2 quattro comes with all-wheel-drive and the six-speed manual 36,440) or cvt 37,640). The 3. 2 avant 37,440) comes with the manual or the tiptronic six-speed automatic 38,640). The a4 3. 2 models feature a 255-hp v6 and come standard with leather upholstery, a sunroof, and 17-inch wheels.  options for the 3. 2 models include a cold weather package 1,000) with heated seats and a ski sack, and audi's s-line sport package 2,750), which adds 18-inch wheels with performance or all-season tires, sport suspension, brushed aluminum trim and s-line styling tweaks.  the s4 sedan 47,500) and s4 avant 48,500), which feature a 340-hp 4. 2-liter v8 and standard quattro. This is a high-performance sedan of the first order, with a 420-hp 4. 2-liter v8, manual transmission only and a special quattro system that biases power delivery to the rear wheels. It also includes most of the comfort and convenience features offered across the line.  safety features that come standard include front-seat front and side-impact airbags, curtains-style head-protection airbags front and rear, and advanced, full-feature electronic stability and anti-lock braking systems (abs). Rear-seat side airbags 350) and a tire pressure monitor 250) are optional. walkaroundthe audi a4 looks like a premium-grade car. It's classy and assertive, just short of overtly aggressive, with a tidy, well-planted stance that oozes presence. That presence is strong enough to disguise the a4's dimensions.  this is a relatively small car: considerably smaller than competitors like the cadillac cts or infiniti g35, and very close in most measures to the compact honda civic.  the eye immediately settles on the a4's big, tall grille, of which opinions vary. The only consensus seems to be that it's different, and it immediately identifies the a4 as an audi.  the headlights give the front-end an assertive look, with lenses that angle upward as they wrap around the fenders. Laterally split intakes below the body-colored bumper and outboard of the grille do double duty, housing fog lamps and channeling air toward the front disc brakes. A modest hood swell, which designers call a power bulge, carries the grille's vertical outlines back to the roof pillars. On the ultra-high performance rs4, the hood and fenders are fabricated from aluminum to reduce weight.  the a4's profile shows a sharply creased shoulder line running the length of the car, from the trailing corner of the headlights to the leading edge of the tail lights. The side windows are nicely proportioned to the body mass, atop a relatively high beltline. A bump strip breaks up the expanse of the lower door panels. The fully automatic, electro-hydraulic roof will open or close at speeds up to 19 mph. That's handy if a rain squall sneaks up while profiling through town. The soft top is thickly insulated, with a glass rear window and defroster, so it shouldn't be too big a detriment in cold climates. interiorthe premium-grade look outside the audi a4 carries through inside, thanks to clean, elegant design, generally rich-looking materials and good finish work. Colors combinations tend to be muted, and a choice of wood trims or aluminum inserts complement the leather, cloth and plastics.  the standard a4 seats are well bolstered, with plenty of lumbar support. We found them comfortable. The sports seats in s and rs models have big side bolsters that are harder to slide over, but the payback is velcro-like grip on a driver's backside and torso. The standard cloth upholstery feels durable and provides a bit of grip itself. The seats, mirrors, steering column and other features adjust in every conceivable direction, helping drivers find a comfortable seating position.  interior space, however, is not one of the a4's strengths, even compared to some sedans with similar exterior dimensions. To be sure, there is more than adequate space for average-sized adults to adjust, move and stretch in front, without pangs of claustrophobia. On a regular basis, the smaller space in the back seat is best reserved for children and pre-teens.  all of the a4's controls are focused on the driver; with few exceptions, they're ergonomically configured and intuitively located. The steering wheel hub repeats the grille's trapezoidal outline. A minimalist set of secondary controls on the wheel spokes manages audio and other functions. Column-mounted stalks operate the usual array of features and are clearly marked, except for the rear wiper/washer switch on the avant, which is controlled by the right-hand lever. We like audi's lane-change signal feature, which delivers three turn-signal blinks.
