2006 hyundai sonata review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new mid-size sedan is a compelling buy. introductionthe mid-size, mid-price car market is approaching saturation. Depending on how they're counted, more than seven nameplates compete for shoppers looking for a car that's thrifty, yet performs; that's comfortable, but not expensive; that's fresh and new, but promises to be reliable.  korea's car makers have never been a part of this class. They've danced around the edges, with the kia optima and hyundai sonata. But neither car has broken through and established a solid foothold in the mainstream u. Market.  enter the all-new 2006 hyundai sonata.  while the previous-generation sonata made a dramatic jump to the top spot in the j. Power and associates 2004 initial quality study ranking of entry midsize cars, the 2006 sonata has been completely redesigned. It's bigger, better equipped, more technologically advanced and sharper looking than the 2005 model it replaces.  the class in which the new sonata competes, however, is blurred. Exterior-wise, it goes against mid-size sedans, primarily the honda accord, toyota camry and nissan altima and secondarily against the chevrolet malibu, the kia optima and the upcoming ford fusion. Inside, though, the '06 sonata moves up a class, to large car, which gives it a potential edge in creature comfort.  with minor and essentially immaterial exceptions, it lives up to that potential. It's roomier in almost every dimension than its midsize competitors, which is no surprise. Fit and finish is on a par with most others in the class, which also is no surprise. In terms of performance, it equals or bests comparably featured cars, which is a surprise. It's cleaner, too, than earlier sonatas. Just as important, if not more so, the new sonata is aggressively priced, positioned smack in the middle of the range of prices of the mid-size sedans.  all this combined makes the 2006 hyundai sonata good enough to put the mid-priced, midsize market on notice. Two engines and three transmissions are available. The uplevel engine is a 235-horsepower v6. Standard equipment includes air conditioning; cruise control; power outside mirrors, windows and central locking with keyless remote; am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo; and leather-wrapped, tilt steering wheel. The list of standard items starts with those on the gl and expands to include fog lamps; premium-grade cloth upholstery and cut-pile carpeting; choice of wood-grain or metal-grain interior trim accents; steering wheel-mounted, redundant audio controls; adjustable lumbar in driver's seat; five-function trip computer; carpeted floor mats; and 16-inch alloy wheels in place of the gl's hub-capped steel wheels. The gls order sheet has two option boxes. One is for a power, tilt-and-slide glass sunroof 850). The other is for a premium package 1350) containing the aforementioned sunroof plus auto-dimming inside rearview mirror with compass (both with a much-appreciated on/off switch), homelink programmable garage and security remote and eight-way power driver's seat.  next up the gls v6 20,895), which comes standard with a five-speed automatic. This brings with it solar control window glass, chrome exterior window trim and chrome-tipped dual exhausts. The sunroof is an option 850). The optional premium sport package 1500) includes the sunroof, 17-inch wheels with michelin pilot tires, the electrochromic rearview mirror with compass, homelink and power driver's seat.  on the top rung is the lx 22,895), which comes with everything on the gls plus leather-trimmed seats and simulated leather interior door panel inserts. Distinguished by chrome exterior door handles, the lx also gets automatic air conditioning with hyundai's air quality system, which shifts to recirculating when it detects offensive or polluted outside air; a sliding cover on the front center console; the auto-dimming inside rearview mirror with compass; the homelink system; the eight-way power driver's seat; and a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. The sunroof can be obtained separately 850) or as part of an lx-exclusive premium package 1400) that also has a am/fm/cd6 changer/mp3 stereo with subwoofer.  safety features in addition to the mandatory dual-stage front-seat airbags include front-seat side-impact airbags for torso protection and full-coverage side curtain airbags, designed to provide head protection, all standard on all models. Active-safety features include antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and electronic stability control with traction control, all standard. These crash-avoidance features are optional or not available on many of the other vehicles in this class. walkarounddesign tastes are extremely volatile in the automotive world. A styling cue like an arched-eyebrow headlight treatment can go from eye-catching to invisible in a couple years. Or it can survive for decades and come to be accepted as a brand trademark, such as bmw's twin-kidney grille. The hyundai sonata hasn't yet found its signature trademark cues, but the 2006's designers are looking in the right places.  the new sonata's fascia is refreshingly clean and spare, with sharply angled headlight housings and a quiet, clean-cut grille topped with a sliver of chrome. Wide and deep openings beneath the front bumper provide a home for tightly focused foglamps and visually pull the front end closer to the ground while directing cooling air into the radiator. The striking, concave hood reduces the car's perceived mass without cramping the engine compartment.  the side treatment avoids the all-too-common wedge look with an almost horizontal beltline riding above softly shouldered fenders and door panels. Mirrored 'z' seams where the end corners of the bumpers meet the quarter panels add interest, while blacked-out window surrounds play down the tallish side glass. The flat-flanged rims on the up-level 17-inch wheels suggest a high-end european import more than an affordable asian nameplate.  the taillight outlines repeat the headlight shapes and bookend a broad, trapezoidal license plate inset. Again, there's a hint of other cars' architecture, most notably contemporary camrys and accords. Sporty, california hotrod-idiom dual exhausts mark the v6-equipped models. interiorthe 2006 hyundai sonata's interior marks a major step up the quality ladder. Some rough edges on a few plastic molds and a less-than-lustrous finish on some dash panels are the only shortcomings we noticed. The overall look, though, is clearly competitive with most in the class and better than some.  a polished, hard-surfaced applique capped with a thin slice of chrome divides the upper and lower halves of the dash. The upper is a glare-absorbing dark color, the lower a space-enhancing light tone. The passenger airbag enclosure is seamless, mimicking the trend in higher-end midsize sedans.  as with many modern cars, the stereo head is fully integrated into the dash, making difficult any aftermarket customizing of the sound system but adding an upscale touch. Air conditioner controls are mounted beneath the stereo, within the accent trim centered in the lower portion of the center stack. Stereo and air conditioner controls are substantial, finger-friendly, intuitive knobs and buttons, with status and selections clearly displayed in their respective lcd screens.  three round dials in the hooded instrument cluster communicate the bare necessities of operational data to the driver, with the largest the speedometer nestled inside a polished circle. To its left is the tachometer, to its right conjoined water temperature and fuel gauges. In the lower dash to the left of the steering column are a bank of five switch plugs, only two of which are employed in the u. Version, one as an on/off for the esc, the other the dash-light rheostat, and a flip-down storage bin. The ignition key slides into a slot placed where it should be, in the dash to the right of the steering column instead of on the steering column itself.  all models get a leather-wrapped steering wheel. On the gls and lx, the steering wheel serves multiple duties. Besides the obvious, redundant controls for the audio (arrayed somewhat oddly, with the mode selector on top and the volume controlled by the lower two, versus the more common approach of sandwiching the mode button between the volume controls) are appended to the lower left-side of the hub. On the other side of the hub are the cruise controls, with a helpful cancel function.  outward visibility is good, although the wide c-pillars constrict quick, over-the-shoulder traffic checks for lane changing. Rear side windows roll all the way down, thanks to small, fixed, rear quarter windows that move the windows' rear tracks forward in the door. The cloth upholstery on the gl looks and feels durable; on the gls, it's a bit fancier in texture and stitchi. 2005 scion tc review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This little rocket was developed in only 13 months with a single purpose in mind.  the scion tc means to make mincemeat of the honda civic that is so popular with gen y drivers by offering a single, very well equipped model at a nearly unbeatable low price and a menu of options that will allow owners to built cars unique to their tastes.  the engine is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful. The steering, ride quality and handling are commendable. Braking is powerful, with abs and electronic brake force distribution standard. This car is surprisingly quiet, the interior materials are first-rate, and attention to detail is evident. The bucket seats are comfortable and there's enough room to suit tall drivers. A 160-watt stereo is standard, and a full array of airbags is available.  this is perhaps the best small japanese coupe we have ever driven, at a price that is ridiculously low. lineupthe scion tc hatchback coupe 15,950) comes only one way, with no model name attached. (they apparently couldn't call it xc because volvo already uses xc90 for its sport utility). It comes with all the major comfort and convenience items built in, including air conditioning, power steering, brakes, locks and mirrors, a tilt wheel, a 160-watt pioneer 6-cd changer am/fm setup, sport bucket seats with cloth seating and position memory, two-tiered console, reclining front and rear seats, keyless entry, engine immobilizer, cargo cover, and a dozen other items.  there are only two factory-installed options, the automatic transmission at $845 and the side and roof air bag system for $650. To make the car more palatable to more people, scion has chosen a menu of 40 different freestanding options, more than any other car in its class, ranging from a $4500 supercharger kit good for 200 horsepower to a selection of different chrome and leather shift knobs. Special toyota racing development (trd) high-performance items for the scion tc include 18- and 19-inch wheels, a lowering kit, struts and shock absorbers, rear anti-roll bar, a high-performance clutch, a quick shifter, a stainless steel muffler, and a shift-point indicator light kit. Toyota's high-performance arm is already working on a 300-horsepower package of parts for the lunatic fringe. walkaroundthe look of the scion tc is one of purposeful performance. It's not blatant, and it doesn't come with spoilers, rocker moldings or wings, but all the ingredients are there. The standard panorama glass roof is an unexpected bonus in this price class, fitted without gaskets for a tight, no-creaks fit. It filters 97 percent of uv rays and 100 percent of infrared, to avoid damage to occupants.  the doors are quite long for such a small car, and the door handles of the reach-around-and-pull variety that we like. The long rear side window suggests a two-door sedan more than a hatchback coupe, and makes the design flow from front to rear gracefully. The tc is the first purpose-built scion, the other two having been developed from concept vehicles, and although it is inexpensive, it is anything but cheap. interiorinside the scion tc, there are lots more positive surprises. Materials are first-rate, there aren't a whole lot of different grains and textures, and the swoopy brushed-metal center stack housing vents, sound system and climate control system, is a marvel of modern design. Very comfortable, with enough fore/aft adjustment to suit very tall american drivers regardless of age. The driver's and shotgun seats can be reclined all the way down into what scion calls a 'sleep' position, and the rear seats recline through 10 stops and 45 degrees of recline to convert the interior into a conversation bin. With seats up, there's more than 26 inches of cargo length there; with the second seats dropped, almost 60 inches; and with the front passenger seat folded over, almost 104 inches of cargo length available.  there are lots of convincing little touches indoors, like the mechanical seat position memory on the front bucket seats, the 60/40 split folding rear seat, the very decent amount of storage space with the seats down, the dead pedal for the driver's left foot, fully closing vents, and a cover for the stereo system's faceplate. The three-pod instrument panel is amber-illuminated, deeply tunneled and easy to use, day or night, as are the balance of the instruments and controls. driving impressionthe engine in the scion tc has been around in one form or another as a car and truck powerplant for many years, continuously improved for power, torque, and toyota levels of quietness and reliability. It comes with electronic variable valve timing for good low end torque development, and twin balance shafts for smoothness. Tuned to 160 horsepower and 163 foot-pounds of torque for this application, the engine is quiet, smooth, and plenty powerful in a 2900-pound car, and at full throttle, it sounds powerful without being intrusive, because it has a valved muffler that opens up at high rpm and can be worth as much as 5 horsepower.  the transmission gearing in the automatic that we drove for this test is wholly unsuitable for bigtime acceleration, with an overall ratio of just over 10:1 (the first-gear ratio times the axle ratio), while the manual is almost 50 percent lower, almost 15:1, for maximum acceleration in first gear. However, the automatic does move out smartly, it's obviously much easier to live with in gooey traffic, and will get significantly better highway mileage than the manual, which is saddled with a very low 4. 235 axle ratio. No complaints on the powertrain.  the steering, ride quality and overall handling of the scion tc were commendable, in part due to its 106-inch wheelbase, longest in the class. It steers with a hefty touch, but accurate pointing, and transitions are easy and without drama. That's because the tc has low-cost macpherson strut front suspension coupled with an expensive independent double-wishbone rear suspension not found on many cars in this price class. Bridgestone potenza tires originally developed for the hot-rod lexus is 300 are standard.  braking is accomplished with a combination of ventilated front and sold rear discs, 10. 8 inches front and 10. 6 inches rear, generously sized and quite powerful for a car this light, with both abs and electronic brake force distribution built into the standard price. All it takes is money. There's nothing missing. Bucket Seats✔ AM/FM✔ Climate Control✔ CD Changer✔ Air Conditioning

2002 nissan sentra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth, quiet, and economical, it's stable and enjoyable on long drives.  for 2002, nissan has introduced the se-r and se-r spec v versions of the sentra. They are an absolute hoot to drive. Its 1. 8-liter engine produces 122 horsepower. It has a standard automatic transmission and air conditioning.  gxe is a popular model comes standard with air conditioning, a digital clock, radio, cd player, front and rear cup holders, power windows and locks, and remote keyless entry.  se-r replaces the se model introduced in 2000 and revives the name of a famous version of the sentra. The current sentra was designed by nissan's california styling studio, the same group that did the exciting xterra sport-utility and the aggressive frontier compact pickup truck. Their goal was to eliminate 'entry-level' thinking, to design a car with its own character that happens to be in the right price range for a lot of people. It's robust, rounded and just a little sassy.  nissan learned that refined and nimble little economy cars don't sell too well if they're homely. It learned this from its 1995-1999 sentra. There's a lot of competition for economy cars coming from bigger used cars, which are now off-lease and selling at attractive discounts. But some folks, particularly smart female shoppers, prefer new, reasonably priced sedans with warranties to used cars.  this newest-generation sentra is an attractive car. The term compact is relative, as all these cars seem to grow over time. The new sentra pushes the boundaries of its sub-compact industry classification. The seats in the se-r are supportive with big side bolsters. One knob on the side adjusts the front half of the seat bottom; another knob adjusts the rear half.  the sentra interior is roomy, both for people and cargo. The rear seats are able to accommodate grownups, and all seating positions provide good breathing room. All three seating positions in the rear have three-point belts, though three back there is a crowd. This is equipment that many bigger sedans didn't have just five years ago.  the trunk is big, with 11. 6 cubic feet of cargo space. An available 60/40 split folding rear seatback can be unlatched from the trunk (difficult to figure out without help), making the sentra a versatile cargo hauler. The available fosgate subwoofer looks like it could get in the way here, however.  the red markings on black gauges are difficult to read on bright days with sunglasses on (there's a surprise), but they look cool at night. Stereo controls are positioned high on the center console, making them easy to adjust, and the metallic trim of the faceplate matches the latest in european continental design found on the trendy ford focus. Other controls are straightforward and easy to use. A compartment on top of the dash is useful for storing a wallet or sunglasses. The cup holders work well for standard size cans and cups. driving impressionno matter the model, the sentra hums right along. We drove a gxe with a five-speed manual to 100 mph quite easily in the desert, and it was revving at a relatively calm 4500 rpm. It felt stable at this speed, and wind and tire noise were low. At the legal speed limit of 70 mph, the engine turns just 3100 rpm in fifth gear; the automatic-equipped model revs even lower.  gxe and xe models run smoothly and quietly. The new 1. 8-liter engine revs easily to its 6500 redline. The epa rates it at 26/33 mpg city/highway with an automatic transmission, and 27/35 with a five-speed manual. This engine uses a timing chain instead of the cheaper and quieter timing belt. Most americans opt for automatic transmissions in their sentras, making the new five-speed gearbox a rarer item. Low-rpm torque and carefully mapped gearing allow gxe and xe models with automatics to accelerate quickly from intersections yet cruise at highway speeds in a relaxed manner. Big motor mounts isolate the engine, deadening noise and vibration.  the se-r and se-r spec v models rekindle memories of the famed datsun 510 and the original se-r that succeeded it in nissan's lineup from 1991-94. The power band is very linear. The more powerful spec v adds to the fun. Weighing in at 2,743 pounds, the spec v has a 15. 2:1 power-to-weight ratio (it's 16. 0:1 for the standard se-r). Nissan claims 0 to 60 mph acceleration times of less than 7 seconds for the spec v.  handling is even more impressive than acceleration. It's easy to rotate the car in corners using the throttle, making it a lot of fun to drive. The rack-and-pinion steering provides quick and direct control. The se-r uses larger front and rear stabilizer bars and front suspension tower bracing.  the big brakes slow the se-r quickly. We found them easy to modulate at laguna seca raceway and on the pacific coast highway. This special lsd allows the front wheels to rotate at different rates, greatly reducing understeer in corners. This lets the driver get back on the power much sooner in turns. This special limited-slip front differential improves the spec v's balance when accelerating out corners.  se-r spec v builds upon the se-r's handling capabilities. Front spring rates have been increased 15 percent and rear spring rate has been increased 16 percent and there is improved shock absorber tuning. High-performance 215/45zr17 tires on special 17-inch wheels complete the suspension package and give sentra a tough, sport-compact look.  the nissan six-speed manual tends to be notchy. 2009 hyundai sonata review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Economical midsize sedan improved for 2009. introductionhyundai sonata gets a host of revisions for the 2009 model year. It comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, cruise control, power heated outside mirrors, power windows, central locking with keyless remote, am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo with six speakers, xm satellite radio, tilt steering wheel, 60/40 folding rear seat, and 215/60r16 tires on 16-inch steel wheels. The popular equipment package 650) adds automatic headlights, chrome window belt moldings, upgraded interior accents, power driver seat with adjustable lumbar support, steering wheel audio controls and a trip computer. The premium package 1,650) for se adds an upgraded am/fm/xm/6cd/mp3 audio system with six speakers, subwoofer and component amplifier; power tilt-and-slide sunroof; and an electrochromic auto-dimming rear view mirror with homelink and a compass.  the limited 23,970) adds leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, automatic climate control with filtration, the top-line audio system, electrochromic auto-dimming rear view mirror with homelink and compass, door sill trim and a sunroof. A chrome grille, chrome-accented exterior door handles, and bodyside moldings identify limited from the outside. Wheels and tires are the same size as those on the se, but use a different tread pattern. The limited v6 25,670) is similarly equipped. A new voice-activated navigation system is available 1250).  safety features on all sonatas include dual-stage front-seat airbags; front-seat side-impact airbags for torso protection; and full-coverage side curtain airbags designed to provide head protection. Antilock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and electronic stability control (esc) with traction control also come standard, as does a tire-pressure monitor. walkaroundalthough it's just a couple of years old, the hyundai sonata has been given a mild facelift for 2009. The front fascia remains refreshingly clean and spare, with sharply angled headlight housings and a deeper, clean-cut grille topped with a sliver of chrome. Wide and deep openings beneath the front bumper provide a home for tightly focused fog lamps and visually pull the front end closer to the ground, while directing cooling air into the radiator. The striking, concave hood reduces the car's perceived mass without cramping the engine compartment.  the side treatment avoids the all too common wedge look with an almost horizontal beltline riding above softly shouldered fenders and door panels. Mirrored z-seams where the end corners of the bumpers meet the quarter panels add interest, while blacked-out window surrounds play down the tall side glass. The flat-flanged rims on the up-level 17-inch wheels suggest a high-end european import more than an affordable asian nameplate.  the taillight outlines repeat the headlight shapes and bookend a broad, trapezoidal license plate inset; the backup light portion of the lens is smaller but output is the same. Again, there's a hint of other cars' architecture, most notably segment heavyweights like the camry, accord, and malibu. Sporty, california hot rod-idiom dual exhausts mark the v6-equipped versions.  the hyundai sonata continues to refine its signature design cues, the sculptors looking in the right places without offending conservatism. interiorthe 2009 sonata interior is a significant step forward from the previous model, although housed in the same cabin space. It is judged a large car by epa size standards and is the largest among midsize sedans in terms of interior volume.  the cabin feels more integrated, with new flowing lines for 2009. A tapered center stack rolls gently off the dash into the center console, replacing the blocky look of the previous dash. The overall look is competitive with most in the class and reminds us of some nissan and acura interiors. Materials seem to have more depth, as even the hard plastic trim common on lower door and console panels looks better.  lighter materials frame the vents and center stack. The center stack houses the clock, audio and navigation systems, and climate controls. There's also a sizable bin that holds 10 cd jewel cases above the ashtray ahead of the shifter. Splashes of trim grow from the console outward mid-height on the dash and are mirrored on the doors; on cars with woodgrain trim the shifter gets a slice of the same material. The largest is the speedometer, to its left is the tachometer, to its right conjoined water temperature and fuel gauges. In the lower dash to the left of the steering column is a bank of five switch plugs, only two of which are employed in the u. Version; one is an on/off for the esc (electronic stability control), the other the dash-light rheostat. Beyond that is a flip-down storage bin. The ignition key slides into a slot placed where it should be, in the dash to the right of the steering column instead of on the steering column itself, easier and more elegant when starting or shutting off the car.  for 2009, the limited model is available with a voice-recognition navigation system. Redundant controls for the audio are to the lower left-side of the hub. On the other side of the hub are the standard cruise controls, with a helpful cancel function. All stalk functions are straightforward and require no adaptation.  outward visibility is good, although some will find the wide c-pillars constrict quick, over-the-shoulder traffic checks for lane changing. Rear side windows roll all the way down, thanks to small, fixed, rear quarter windows that move the windows' rear tracks forward in the door, ahead of the wheel well. There's a roof-mounted, hinged assist handle inside every door.  seats are comfortable, with adequate bolstering fo. 2010 volkswagen cc review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The styling is radical by volkswagen standards, certainly eye-catching in its sleekness. The cc, for comfort coupe, was launched as an all-new model for 2009 and carries through 2010 unchanged.  the interior design and materials are exceptional; and the optional two-tone stitched leather bucket seats are downright italian-like. Yet it retails for less than $30,000 taillights over the curb, making it a compelling value. The 2. 0-liter engine makes 200 horsepower and gets an epa-estimated 31 mpg highway on premium fuel. We found it delightful underway, smooth and very responsive.  vr6 models use the dynamic vw 3. 6-liter v6, now making 280 horsepower, and the tiptronic. It's a great setup, though with its higher price the value equation isn't as compelling as it is with the 2. 0.  we found the highway ride smooth and solid, firm but not harsh. The electromechanical steering makes parking easy. The brakes work very well. lineupthe 2010 volkswagen cc models include the sport, luxury, vr6 sport, and vr6 4motion. The only transmission available in the other three models.  sport 27,550) comes with leatherette upholstery, heated 12-way adjustable driver's seat and eight-way passenger seat, premium 6cd/mp3 audio, 17-inch alloy wheels with 235/45r17 self-sealing all-season tires, sports suspension, traction control with differential lock, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and multi-function steering wheel with aluminum trim. The sport comes standard with the six-speed manual transmission, but is also available with the six-speed tiptronic 28,650) automatic.  luxury 32,830) upgrades to leather upholstery, fancier alloy wheels, tilt panorama sunroof, dual zone climate control, park distance control, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, heated washer nozzles, homelink, brushed aluminum interior trim, sirius radio, memory seats and self-dimming rearview mirror. The tiptronic comes standard.  vr6 sport 39,015) adds paddle shifters, power rear sunshade, a 600-watt dynaudio premium sound system. The vr6 sport comes with the v6 engine and tiptronic automatic.  vr6 4motion 40,115) adds volkswagen's sophisticated all-wheel-drive system with haldex center differential.  safety equipment includes six airbags (frontal, side front and full curtain), advanced stability control with abs, tire pressure monitoring system. 4motion can enhance safety in adverse conditions. walkaroundthe cc was a surprise to the market, and the reviews of its styling since its launch have been very favorable. It achieves what it sets out to do: look like a really expensive car. The new sleek roofline seemingly came straight from a hotrod chop shop, lower by a couple of inches (a mere 56 inches tall) and swept back as if the car were racing into a 200-mph wind. The c pillar is wide, but barely visible because it flows back, not down. On the same wheelbase as the passat, the cc has a slightly wider track and is only 1. 2 inches longer, but the shape makes it look bigger. But it's only 62 pounds heavier than a passat.  it's unmistakably volkswagen from the front, because of the big vw in the grille, but mistakable from other angles. It's hard to see that the track is only . 4 inches wider in the front (. 6 in the rear), because of the width of the chrome grill with two horizontal bars, and the wraparound headlamps with arrowhead corners front and back. The air intake under the grille gives the cc a strong jaw, with foglamps each side, under long thin amber slivers for turn signals (with amber slits on the mirrors, very cool). The whole nose says upscale.  the profile says upscale too, but it sure doesn't say volkswagen. The cc looks more upscale than even the $80,000 phaeton. Just not as big.  out of the bold front fender flares, character lines zoom rearward and upward like speed lines, most dramatically the top lines that nearly touch the taillights. The lower line has a chrome strip pasted over it, and it wraps around the rear of the car over the rear bumper. The windshield is steeply raked, the doorsill high and the seat low, although it doesn't have to be that way because height is one of the 12 ways the seat is adjustable. So visibility out the front is not compromised. It's not bad out the rear either, although the headrests don't help; and blind spots from the wide c pillars are reduced by fixed triangular rear door windows behind the passengers' ears. Which are perilously close to the steeply sloping roofline. Rear seat headroom is something that definitely has been compromised by the lower roof.  the two seats in the rear are bucket-like, ergonomically designed like the fronts, with wide thigh bolsters, separated by the space taken up by a rolltop cupholding console, as well as a fold-down armrest (behind which is a pass-through hatch to the trunk for skis and such). Not just cupholders in there, but small triangular bins for poker chips or peanuts or whatever. There's a decent but not sumptious 37. 3 inches of rear legroom.  each seat is a cozy compartment that makes a passenger feel special, to have his or her own space, like a space ship. Plus, there's an emergency medical kit in that console. It's a driver's compartment made for relaxing, with good vents to control the climate. driving impressionthe 200-horsepower, turbocharged 2. 0-liter engine shoots the car forward impressively, as quick, smooth and satisfying as just about any v6 in any sedan: 0-60 in 7. 4 seconds, and only 0. 1 second slower in the quarter-mile than the vr6. Torque is 207 pound-feet, but, importantly, it comes on at 1700 rpm. With variable valve timing and direct injection, in addition to the turbocharger intercooler, the 2. 0 leads its class in technology.  fuel mileage for the 2. 0-liter engine is epa-rated at 21/31 city/highway, which is what we got with more than 50 percent highway driving, including some rapid two-lane transit. Top speed is 130 mph, and we didn't go there, but we'll bet it could run near those speeds without stress, on the autobahn. And although the tiptronic manual mode lends itself to playtime, the rest of the car doesn't really. This is a gentleman's sport sedan comfort coupe thing. Sport is a relative game. 2007 hyundai sonata review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Meanwhile, the sonata finished among the top three mid-size cars in the 2006 j. Power and associates initial quality study. And the sonata earned the national highway traffic safety administration's five-star crash test rating for front and side impacts, the highest rating given.  for the 2007 model year, the sonata promises more content for less money. Retail prices have been lowered on the entry gls models. A new sonata se comes standard with the 234-hp v6 engine and 17-inch wheels and tires, and a new top-of-the-line limited model features a new chrome grille and an optional infinity premium audio system.  this second-generation sonata is bigger, better equipped, more technologically advanced and sharper looking than the previous-generation (pre-2006) model. Exterior-wise, it competes primarily against the honda accord, toyota camry and nissan altima; and secondarily against the chevrolet malibu, kia optima and ford fusion. On the inside, however, the sonata has moved up a class. Sonata is now a large car, with a full-size edge in creature comfort. It's roomier in almost every dimension than its mid-size competitors. Fit and finish are on a par with most others in the class.  in terms of performance, sonata now equals or bests comparably featured cars. The uplevel engine is a 234-hp v6. The v6 comes with the five-speed shiftronic automatic introduced for 2006. Air conditioning; cruise control; power outside mirrors; power windows; central locking with keyless remote; am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo with six speakers; a leather-wrapped, tilt steering wheel; and 16-inch wheels come standard. Xm satellite radio will be standard later in the model year. Options include a power/tilt sunroof 900), eight-way power driver's seat with electrochromic auto-dimming rearview mirror, homelink and compass 550); or all of the above plus cd changer, mp3 player, subwoofer and amplifier 1,950).    the limited 22,995) is a fully equipped luxury model featuring leather seating surfaces, eight-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, automatic climate control with automatic air quality system (aqs), electrochromic auto-dimming rear view mirror with homelink and compass, telescoping steering wheel, and a sliding center armrest. A new chrome center-bar grille and chrome-accented exterior door handles identify limited from the outside. The only option is an ultimate package 1750) consisting of a power/tilt sunroof and an infinity am/fm/mp3/6-cd changer with six speakers, subwoofer and component amplifier.  safety features on all sonatas include the mandatory dual-stage front-seat airbags; front-seat side-impact airbags for torso protection; and full-coverage side curtain airbags designed to provide head protection. Antilock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and electronic stability control (esc) with traction control come standard. walkarounddesign tastes are extremely volatile in the automotive world. A styling cue like an arched-eyebrow headlight treatment can go from eye-catching to invisible in a couple years. Or it can survive for decades and come to be accepted as a brand trademark, such as bmw's twin-kidney grille. The hyundai sonata hasn't yet found its signature trademark cues, but this new generation shows that its designers are looking in the right places.  the sonata's fascia is refreshingly clean and spare, with sharply angled headlight housings and a quiet, clean-cut grille topped with a sliver of chrome. Mirrored z-seams where the end corners of the bumpers meet the quarter panels add interest, while blacked-out window surrounds play down the tallish side glass. Sporty, california hot rod-idiom dual exhausts mark the v6-equipped models. interiorthe interior of this newest hyundai sonata marks a major step up the quality ladder. The overall look is clearly competitive with most in the class and better than some. Some rough edges on a few plastic molds and a less-than-lustrous finish on some dash panels are the only shortcomings we noticed.  a polished, hard-surfaced applique capped with a thin slice of chrome divides the upper and lower halves of the dash. Stereo and air conditioner controls are substantial, finger-friendly, intuitive knobs and buttons, with status and selections clearly displayed in their respective lcds.  three round dials in the hooded instrument cluster communicate the bare necessities of operational data to the driver. The largest is the speedometer, nestled inside a polished circle. To its left is the tachometer, to its right conjoined water temperature and fuel gauges. In the lower dash to the left of the steering column is a bank of five switch plugs, only two of which are employed in the u. Version, one as an on/off for the esc, the other the dash-light rheostat. Beyond that is a flip-down storage bin. The ignition key slides into a slot placed where it should be, in the dash to the right of the steering column instead of on the steering column itself. Easier and more elegant when starting or shutting off the car.  all models get a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Redundant controls for the audio (optional on gls, standard on se and limited) are appended to the lower left-side of the hub. They are arrayed somewhat oddly, with the mode selector on top and the volume controlled by the lower two, versus the more common approach of sandwiching the mode button between the volume controls. On the other side of the hub are the standard cruise controls, with a helpful cancel function. Hyundai says the audio controls will be improved by the end of the model year.  outward visibility is good, although the wide c-pillars constrict quick, over-the-shoulder traffic checks for lane changing. Rear side windows roll all the way down, thanks to small, fixed, rear quarter windows that move the windows' rear tracks forward in the door, ahead of the wheel well. There's a roof-mounted, hinged assist handle inside every door.  seats are comfortable, with adequate bolstering for the style of driving to which the sonata aspires. The standard cloth upholstery looks and feels durable; while the limited's leather adds a touch of class without pretending to be luxurious. The height adjustment on the driver's seat, both manual and power, pivots on the seat's front mounts, which effectively moves the seat forward as it rises. This compels taller drivers to choose between rearward seat travel and forward sightline, not always a happy compromise. On the upside, this adds inches to rear-seat legroom behind the driver, one of the multitude of measures in which the '06 sonata bests the competition. Among the primary competitors, the new sonata comes in second only to the honda accord in front and rear headroom, and to the toyota camry in rear-seat headroom, and by a mere one- to three-tenths of an inch. And of the second-tier competitors, the kia optima alone betters the ne.

2005 cadillac cts review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New v6 engines improve the great american sports sedan. introductionthe 2005 cadillac cts could be called the great american sports sedan. It certainly fits that description with its sporty handling, exhilarating acceleration and powerful braking. Their names are like alphabet soup: cts, sts, xlr, srx. But driving one of them confirms cadillac now builds world-class automobiles.  it was the cts that kicked off this renaissance. Introduced as a 2003 model, its edgy styling immediately grabbed the spotlight. Praise of its dynamic qualities quickly followed from the automotive press, which focused on its superb rear-wheel-drive chassis. Two years later the cts is improved and more refined. The 2005 cts comes with a choice of these new vvt v6 engines, a new 2. 8-liter v6 and a 3. 6-liter v6 introduced as an optional engine last year. Nor would it feel out of place on a race track. Cts-v is only available with a manual shifter.  for 2005, a new six-speed manual gearbox is also available for the regular cts models. Both the 2. 8-liter and 3. 6-liter v6 engines are available with the six-speed manual or the more popular five-speed automatic. We'd march immediately to the responsive automatic if the manual wasn't so good. The 2005 cts also gets a new instrument cluster and a choice of new 16-inch wheels. Built on gm's acclaimed sigma rear-wheel-drive architecture, the cts was rigorously tested at the famed nurburgring racetrack in germany. lineupthe 2005 cts line starts with a new entry-level model that features a new 2. 8-liter v6. It's a sophisticated engine with variable valve timing rated at 210 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. Production of the 2. 8-liter model begins in october 2004 and pricing wasn't available at press time.  a more powerful model comes with a 3. 6-liter v6 vvt 31,700), which develops 255 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 252 pound-feet of torque at 3200 rpm. Also standard are traction control and anti-lock brakes (abs) with brake proportioning, which balances the braking front and rear. Side-impact airbags and side air curtains come standard for front and rear passengers in addition to the standard dual frontal airbags.  the sport package 1,875) takes the suspension tuning a step further with monotube shocks, brake pads with more anti-fade heat resistance, 17-inch alloy wheels with 255/50r17 tires, load-leveling rear suspension, speed-sensitive power steering, and stabilitrak electronic stability control. The luxury package 3,165) includes heater power front seats, memory presets for two drivers, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, homelink universal garage door transmitter, alarm system, and a wood-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob.  the new cts-v 49,300) comes stuffed with the 5. 7-liter v8 ls6 engine from the high-performance corvette z06 rated at 400 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. It comes mated to a tremec six-speed manual gearbox (an automatic is not available). To put this power to the ground, cts-v gets 18-inch wheels, grippy tires, big brembo brakes, and other high-performance tweaks. walkaroundthe cts was the first production car using cadillac's new art & science design vocabulary first shown on the evoq concept car. The design is a festival of wedges, sharp junctions and chiseled angles that can be seen throughout the latest generation of cadillacs. The edgy design is distinctive. There's no confusing a cadillac with anything else.  the cts refines the cadillac tradition of vertical headlamps and taillamps that dates back to 1965. Viewed from the front, the cts is imposing, with its large louvered grille framed by sharp, vertical headlamps. The front air dam is all business, with simple rectangular foglights and a long narrow intake near the skirt. The cts has a short, high deck with tall, vertical taillamps. The view from the rear is broken up by the indentation cut widely around the license plate in a contrasting color. The cts-v looks a bit better here by using body colored plastic. interiorthe angular theme continues inside, although it was softened for 2004. The cts is sold in europe and the interior reflects that. It projects an idea that driving is serious business. Visually, it's an austere cabin, lacking the warmness of the new cadillac sts. The interior is a mix of high-tech textures, some of it dimpled like a golf ball. Many of the materials are soft and interesting to the touch. There's good support for the driver's right leg, and where the right shin touches it feels soft. There's a good support for the left leg as well, with a good dead pedal for the left foot.  the three-spoke steering wheel contains buttons for the sound system and cruise control, and is deliciously padded in leather for all but the part of the rim between about 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock, which is trimmed in wood.  changing the temperature, adjusting the stereo, and operating the navigation system are easy and convenient in the cts. The center stack juts out from the rest of the dash, with the elaborate gps navigation system at the top center location. Climate controls are at the bottom, controlled by amber-lighted pictograms.  the stereo works well, allowing quick and easy switching from a news channel on xm satellite radio to music on fm to traffic on am to a cd. The small triangular speakers for the optional bose system are mounted on the a pillar, and look cool. Onstar is provided, allowing drivers to make hands-free, voice-activated calls. A tall driver or passenger will be comfortable in front and only slightly cramped in the rear. The rear seats are comfortable for two or three passengers, offering good leg room, though lacking in thigh support. There is a convenient pass-thru tunnel between the rear seats, to the trunk, if the split folding rear seats are ordered. driving impressionthe cts drives wonderfully around town. It cruises comfortably on the freeway and feels at home on winding roads.  the new 3. 6-liter v6 is silky smooth when cruising, less so at full throttle. It's a thoroughly modern engine with a 60-degree aluminum block, double overhead cams, variable-valve timing, electronic throttle control, six coils and a structural oil pan. The 2. 8-liter v6 vvt is a modified version of the 3. 6-liter v6 with vvt. The 2. 8 and 3. 6-liter v6 earn the same epa-estimated mileage of 18/27 mpg city/highway and run on regular 87 octane. Choosing between them is a matter of power versus cost. The five-speed automatic transmission is superb. In normal mode, it seems to shift a lot, especially at a casual pace. Selecting the sport mode changes the transmission's attitude, giving it sharp and decisive response. The automatic is an excellent choice for the cts. 2011 subaru legacy review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A sold, distinctive choice for those who shun the commonplace. introductionthe 2011 subaru legacy sedan is an alternative to mainstream sedans. The legacy was completely redesigned for 2010, so only minor changes make their way to the lineup for 2011.  the 2011 legacy 2. 5gt limited gets a sunroof, upgraded trim and satellite radio. The premium harman-kardon stereo system includes satellite radio on 2011 subaru legacy models.  all-wheel drive makes the legacy an excellent choice for anyone who has to contend with weather. The body has pronounced fender flares and a grille with a bold chrome trademark wing. The 2. 5 gt limited trim level features a hood scoop that is both functional and adds to the sporty appearance.  we found the subaru legacy wonderfully comfortable, with high-quality interior trim. We particularly liked the perforated leather on the limited models. These aren't luxury cars, but they are premium cars in terms of the quality of materials and the engineering that goes into them.  we found the base subaru legacy 2. 5i effortless to drive. The transmission works automatically, with nothing to do but put it in drive and go; the optional cvt gets good fuel economy. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, 60/40 split rear seat with armrest, steering wheel with audio and cruise control buttons, stereo with cd player and input jacks, remote entry, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Standard features include a hood scoop fog lights, a sunroof, the all-weather package, satellite radio and unique interior trim.  safety equipment on all 2011 subaru legacy models includes front and front side airbags with side curtain airbags, abs with brake assist, vehicle dynamics control with traction control, and tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe subaru legacy profile is sleek and the roofline is coupe-like. In front, subaru's badge of stars is ringed by a chrome grille. Character lines arc from the grille and form power bulges on the hood and taper upward to the a-pillar.  aggressive wheel arches and edged flares are enhanced by handsome alloy wheels.  there's a short rear deck with squared-off rear valances (smooth and not boxy), part of the standard aero package, giving an impression of size. Along with the 18-inch wheels with wide-profile tires and twin-tip exhaust, it's clear that the gt means business.  the legacy's rigid chassis uses a fully reinforced cage of high-strength steel. Fluid engine mounts help reduce noise. interiorwe found the front bucket seats wonderfully comfortable. Gas strut supports, no intrusion into trunk space: quality detail, for such an affordable midsize car. The rear doors allow for easy entry and exit.  interior materials are high quality all around. The controls on the center stack are all well done. The three-spoke steering wheel isn't as handsome as the rest of the interior, although the optional leather wrap is nice. The ambient lighting for the console is pleasant. Visibility in all directions is good. driving impressionwe tested both transmissions in the base subaru legacy 2. 5i. We like the legacy 2. 5i with the optional continuously variable transmission (cvt). This transmission makes driving effortless and gets 4 more miles per gallon than the 6-speed manual gearbox. The cvt comes with paddle shifters on the steering wheel allowing the driver to shift into different ratios. Called lineartronic, and driven by a chain (actually more of a metal belt) for durability, this compact cvt is subaru's first cvt in recent years, but the company was an early leader in the technology, making cvts some 20 years ago.  all three models have subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive, but they are different systems. The 265-hp turbocharged engine, with its large turbocharger that sits lowe and near to the exhaust, is capable of pulling 258 pound-feet of torque, available from 2000 to 5000 rpm. The 2011 subaru legacy 2. 5gt pulls off a 0-to-60 acceleration time of 5. 9 seconds, much better than the 3. 6r's pokey 7. 1 seconds.  the chassis features a front subframe with a cradle that allows the engine to sit relatively low. But as we mentioned before, it's not going beat the competition in a drag race. summaryin engineering terms, the subaru legacy comes out ahead of the its chief competitors, including camry, accord, mazda6, altima, and passat. The legacy 2. 5gt is an all-out sports sedan, and the legacy 3. 6r is a midsize luxury car. Each model has class-leading virtues. model lineupsubaru legacy 2. 5i 19,995), 2. 5i premium 20,995), 2. 5i limited 25,295), 2. 5gt limited 31,395), 3. 6r 24,995), 3. 6r premium 25,995), 3. 6r limited 28,295). assembled inindiana. model testedsubaru legacy 2. 5i l.
